M83, Horse Head and Centaurus A

Was part of the "imaging contingent" at Pauls place on the weekend.

Managed to get some images of the following (all imaged with the 400D and ED120, guided with the ED80, stacked in DSS and processed in PS)

i. M83 4x30min
ii. Horse Head 4x30min
iii. Centaurus A 1x30min

Thanks for looking.

Really nice piccies, Daniel. I like the one of M83 especially, although they're equally as good as one another. Well done

For an uncooled camera Danny these are really good, all very tidy efforts!

Is the centaurus a shot a single 30 min, or a stacked multiple exposure? How did you get it so noise free from a dslr?

Very nice images Daniel,

Wondered what sort of calibration regime you used, like how many 30 min darks did you apply?

Regards
Trevor

I am continually shocked, stunned and amazed at what this consumer-grade Canon DSLR can acheive in this field.

Amazing work Daniel. 30 minute subs is definitely brave with a DSLR. The noise would be horrendous on a warm summer night.

However your images have turned out very nicely. M83 is my pick of the bunch. The HH and Flame also look great. Lots of detail visible.

Very well done.

Seeing results like these make me very happy I picked a 400D.
Excellent work. Loved the Centaurus A!

Yes, that is a single 30 minute exposure. I was hoping for more subs, but I was too close to the meridian. Next time I will aim for more subs. As for the noise, a few nights prior, I took a set of 4 30 minute darks in preparation.

Cheers

Hi Trevor,

Prior to the weekend, I took four 30 minute darks so that I could make the most of my time in the field taking lights. With the darks I took them at 18 degrees, but the night of the lights, I think it got down to the low teens. I am not sure how significant a difference the temperature would make, but I was thinking that taking darks at a slightly higher temperature would contain more noise, thereby being a worst case scenario. I don't know if that makes sense?

Very impressive work with a DSLR, a couple of questions.

1) What ISO setting did you use for these shots?
2) Is the 400D modified?

Hi Michael,

I took the images at ISO800. As for the 400D, it is a stock standard model, so it is not modified.
