songs with deep meanings
hi guys,
just for something different...
looking into the lyrics and meaning behind a song can be enlightening sometimes, what songs if any have had you in awe as to how deep the meaning behind them goes?

Not my sort of music I'm afraid. A bit too deep and esoteric for me. Much prefer something that is easier on the mind and the ear. Kenny Rogers, The Gambler, Eric Bogle, Now I'm Easy, for instance. Make you think, but don't jangle your ears while doing it

With or without Pavarotti, moves me every time I hear it, along
with what inspired it.
Great thread Monoxide.

If I had to pick only one song it would be:-
"Peace Frog" by The Doors from the album "Morrison Hotel"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMIHl8awV-M
"Indians scattered on Dawns highway bleeding
Ghosts crowd the young childs fragile eggshell mind"

Men at Work's song Downunder. It stirred a little bit of national pride and almost a patriotic attitude. It will be remembered as one of the greats.

My Top 5 would be;
- "Stairway to Heaven" Led Zeppelin
- "Dust in the Wind" Kansas
- "Me and My Arrow" Harry Nilsson (In the Land of Point, where there is no point at all! Classic)
- "Songs of the Quendi" Sally Oldfield (ask ngcles The Observologist.)
- "The Flat Earth" Thomas Dolby
And the least meaningful is Plastic Bertrand "Ca Plane Pour Moi" - "This works for me" (or something like that!). Especially love the first lyrics which translated into English is;
" Wham bam, my cat Splash
is rolling around on my bed. He swallowed
his tongue as he drank all my whisky
As for me, I've hardly slept, I feel empty and reprimanded
I had to sleep in the gutter,
where I had a flash of inspiration
Oooo-ooo-ooo-ooo!
In four colours..."
Oh dear! (better in French!)
Much too deep for me, but there you go!

Man, that is really heavy stuff. Those who have seen the 1980 cult movie "Broken Glass" would understand. It freaked me out, admittedly.
Note: The video of Eighth Day here is from the movie.
I'd prefer her song "Time" from her second album "Sons and Lovers" instead, especially thinking of the lyrics;
" How could we see the way that things change
Time takes its toll don't stay the same
Suddenly now is a long time gone
Time is immortal it waits for none (just on and on)
It's here and it's gone, the time run out on us."
Brrrrrrrrr.....

The Flat Earth (live)
I mentioned Thomas Dolby "The Flat Earth", I found a Youtube live version of this same song, which some might really enjoy! The Flat Earth Version 1 Another The Flat Earth Version 2
I do love the last line;
" And in time you'll come to understand
The flat ol' Earth is in your gentle hands"

Hey Monoxide,
this is a great thread - seriously
It's yonks since I've even thought of Hazel O'Connor's 8th Day, but I've always thought that was a brilliant toon, - even better with the YouTube video.
For me, "Desiderata", the words of course being taken directly from Max Ehrmann's poem, was fabulous in it's simplicity.
DESIDERATA
"Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy."
Some of those words might seem particularly meaningful to some of us right now !
All the best

Almost anything by Jesus Rodriguez. I'm amazed that there hasn't been any covers made, it's still so relevent after all these years.
"Wish You Were Here" can bring me to tears, sentimental schmuck that I am.

I assume you mean Pink Floyd and not Alice Cooper's version.
"I sent you a postcard
Thought it would be funny
Would have sent a souvenir
But they took all my money
It's pretty warm down here but it ain't sunny
And I'm having a Hell of a time, my dear
Wish you were here." and I always laugh at the line...
"Can't get a ticket to get me home, dear
They just don't have too many flights from twilight zone, dear" Perhaps no meaningful, but certainly witty...

The only 2 songs on Cold Fact that I don't really like were the ones he had the most commercial success with, "Sugar Man" and "I Wonder".

And who could ever forget all the many interpretations of "Stairway to Heaven" on Andrew Dentons' "Money or the Gun."
