From the Vault: High-Resolution Clavius Mosaic

In the From the Vault series, I feature an older image which hasn’t been seen on my site before and I talk about the capture and processing and hopefully highlight why this image is special to me.

The feature image in From the Vault this week is a high-resolution mosaic image of the Clavius crater on the Moon, as well as some other craters captured on the same night. It was the day before New Years Eve in 2007, the weather was hot and the seeing was variable. Fortunately it steadied for a period of about 5 minutes, long enough for me to capture enough data to compile this 4-frame mosaic of Clavius.

It’s my highest-resolution and best image of Clavius, or any crater i’ve imaged so far. The lighting was perfect, giving just enough contrast to help the small craterlets and rilles stand out while still fully illuminating all the features. The resolution is about 200 metres per pixel at the focal length I was working at (approx 10.5 metres).

Read more and see the image at :

Thanks for looking.

Very very impressive, well done Mike.

Love the detail in the Clavius mosaic, so intricate. Don't think I have seen another image of Clavius that compares with this effort.

I also thought your images of Tycho and Plato were top shelf.
The number of craterlets that you managed to capture on the floor of Plato is very impressive.

I read with interest the technique you employed, in particular the use of your Red filter. I had never previously given any thought to trying this.

On reflection it seems quite a top idea, the wavelengths captured through the red filter, obviously are less effected by their passage through our atmosphere and will provide sharper data.

Also the use of the filter wheel will be like including an extension and will give more image scale.

Well done and thanks for sharing.

Regards
Trevor

That's a great image Mike So detailed and clear.

Amazing to think it's taken standing on earth. Feels like you are right there just above the surface of the moon.

Cheers

Gary
