Venus Jan 20 - UV + IR (false colour)

Took advantage of a clear western sky just after sunset to record this false colour image of Venus.

This is a composite of R (IR) + G (UV+IR) + B (UV).

The usual set-up: C9.25, DMK21AF04, 2.5x Powermate.

Thanks for looking.

Wow, that's darn good for Venus!!

Excellent image. Very sharp and variation in cloud colour too. Very good result, you must be happy with that!

Lovely image Matt. A silly question: what is false color image? I have a webcam with IR/UV filter.Do I get similar color if I remove it then image?

Hi.

In a nutshell, no.

False colour imaging is when you use separate UV and IR filters to replace the traditional Blue and Red channels when making an RGB image.

An IR/UV cut filter does a different thing altogether, in that it blocks transmission of light at those wavelengths to stop 'bleeding' into your channels.

At the moment, I'm creating a synthetic Green channel from combining both IR and UV.

I then take all three (IR-synthetic Green-Red) into Photoshop where I combine them to make one image.

It involved a little tweaking to get the right 'look'...but that's about it.

Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone.

Your kind words and feedback are much appreciated.

I wish we were getting a few more clear sunset nights to capture more data while Venus is at a good elongation...but we've not been too lucky of late.

Ah well...can't win 'em all.
