my first scope (which i bought in feb of last year) was an elcheapo wobbleotronic ebay refractor which for some reason had reasonably good optics and offered ok views. I was thinking of making it into a short-tube by just cutting the tube down and rescrewing the focuser on (which can be done with relative ease(i have checked)).

I just want to know the implications of this. how does it effect the focusing .balance and performance etc?

I think the tube is long because the focal length of the lens needs that length to be able to come to focus..

Cutting it shorter and putting it back together, I imagine would give you blurry views because the light path hasn't converged at the right point.

You can't chop the length off. It has a fixed focal length.

Piggy-back it to your scope and use it as a finder or as a secondary scope for someone else to look through whilst you are viewing. They will see what you see (to a limit).

I am going to do the same with my kids. I am going to mount their scopes on mine so we can all look at the same thing at the same time. Also gives their small scopes a more solid mounting!


p.s. Also good for visitors - keeps their grubby eyes off my eyepiece.
