Prints through Red Bubble

Not sure how many people have heard of the site Red Bubble?

It's a place you can upload your artwork (pictures, photography, sketches, designs, writing) and display it to the community there, and also offer it up for sale as greeting cards, prints, etc.

I blogged about it this morning.

I'd heard of it but hadn't looked into it until recently, when I was put onto it by someone who already has an account there. I created an account last Thursday and uploaded a few of my favourite recent images.

As I said in my blog, I'd always had some friends or work colleagues who said to me "Why aren't you selling your stuff?", but I just wasn't inclined to sit at a market stall all day on Saturday, hoping to pick up some sales from tourist trade but also having to worry about keeping stock, printing the right images, framing, etc.

Red Bubble takes all that pain away. You just upload the hi-res images, and they take care of the order process, printing, framing, postage etc, and you take a cut of the final sale price.
There's a base price for a particular item at a particular size, and you decide the markup percentage. For example, if they charge $100 for a large framed print, you can put a markup of, for example, 30%, and the retail price is then $130. When you make a sale, you get the $30.

It's a pretty cool site and has some amazing photography and artwork there. Loads of illustrations and digital artwork stuff too if that's your cup of tea.

Since setting up the account on Thursday, I've now made 4 sales (3 of the conjunction image and one of the milky way galaxy).

The publicity through APOD has no doubt helped a little, but it's certainly a great start and it's awesome to think that my images have moved someone enough to actually spend money and find a place on their wall to hang it.

It's not something that's going to make me rich, and I might not make a sale for the next 2 years, but it's a good avenue if you're proud of your work and want to reach a broader/different audience.

great idea i have recently been asking a few guys around here if they would sell some of their pics i have seen some great work floating around these forums there is quite a few pics that i would love to have on my walls (would be better if they were my own, but thats not going to happen any time soon )
The only thing i dont like the sound of the middle man though, id rather give you $30 for the pic than pay $130 for it

Congrats on the sales Mike

On my last holiday to the US, I visited a place called Sausalito in San Francisco (just over the golden gate bridge). The place is a small mecca for artists, with dozens of small art galleries. Now I'm not an art sort of person, but I enjoyed walking around in these small galleries for a few hours. Several of the galleries were dedicated purely to photographic art. I'm not saying that you should have your work displayed in an art gallery, but you do have a good eye for a great picture, and this is proven in your work to date!

I make a little cash on the side selling my own feeble attempts at Astro and Land photography. (I print and frame them myself to keep costs to a minimum)
Being a member of the local Art Society certainly helps. I have a room to myself at our Art Gallery where I can display my work and we set up stands at the markets and shows.
I pay a 15% commission on all sales through the Gallery and Art Society organised stalls. But if I setup on my own, the money is all mine.
I bought my Canon 20D with the profits from last financial year.

Good post Mike.

Colleague of mine suprised me with a framed comet McNaught print - very very nicely done. Also bought me a messier T-shirt, unfortunately size was a small so I've given it to my daughter as a summer pyjama top.

Hey - but some interesting stuff there thats for sure!
