Canberra Planetarium Closed ! ! ! !

HI guys,

This is sad news. It's a shame. It was very professional with top equipment and staff. I will miss catching an occasional show when I've been down there.

Someone in Sydney should take up the business, although, as you can see from below, the club is keen to keep it in Canberra. Surely such a facility say at some place like Penrith Panthers could make it profitable?

wrt to Canberra, maybe Stromlo should pick it up? They seem to be determined to develop the mountain again - what a great addition to their visitor's centre!

fyi, I came across this site when I googled "Canberra Planetarium closing'

http://fuzzylogicon2xx.blogspot.com/...g-noooooo.html

The Canberra Planetarium and Observatory in Downer, beloved for its quaint stargazing documentaries and fantastic suite of telescopes for checking out nebulae, is due to close at the end of this month (this was Jan). The Tradies Club in Dickson, which owns the site, is planning to put something exciting like apartments in.

The Club has very kindly offered to donate the equipment to any organisation in the ACT that has the resources and is prepared to house, maintain and operate this valuable educational and community facility. To facilitate the relocation process, some local astronomers and concerned citizens have formed an association called the Planetarium and Observatory Association of Canberra (POAC). They intend to explore any existing government, educational and community support and to research potential funding sources. POAC membership is open to anybody interested in supporting this cause. It costs $2 to join, more information is available through eye_see_ewe[at]hotmail.com

Regards

Glenn

Bummer!

It was one of the things that made it worthwhile to travel to Canberra...

I like the Stromlo idea!

Very sad if this has happened. Funny, but the planetarium web-site doesn't mention anything about closing.

http://www.ctuc.asn.au/planetarium/information.html

Has it really closed?

Cheers -

Yes, the Canberra Planetarium closed its doors on Australia Day after ten years of operation. The facility had around 30,000 visitors a year. It was the main nighttime attraction for school groups visiting the capital. As an employee, it was a privilege to work there and have the oppotunity to get the kids excited about astronomy.

Membership to the Planetarium and Observatory Association of Canberra (POAC) is actually $5. Many of us who worked at the Planetarium are members and would welcome any new members and their support. Regular progress updates will be sent to all members. Michael Nelmes is the POAC Secretary and the current contact for new memership. Email gliese581b@optusnet.com.au to request a membership form.

The Planetarium and Observatory Association of Canberra is working hard to ensure that the region will once again have an operational planetarium. For those that may be interested, I invite you to explore the new POAC web site currently under development at: http://www.poac.org.au/ The site contains updates on what we've been up to and will soon feature a forum for members to contribute to.

Also, there is an ABC TV Stateline story at: http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2008/11/14/2420406.htm

Never been to it .

Why wont the ANU take the gear and reestablish it on campus ? Or another uni ?

Or perhaps one of the larger astroclubs ?

Would be ashame for the projector and gear associated with it be sent to a scrap merchant or to go overseas.
