Saturn - first view

Sorry chaps, nothing exciting, just to let you know that early this morning, my youngest woke me up and so the brain kicked into gear and could not go back to sleep.

I jumped on computer and thought i would check with starry night, when saturn was rising. it was getting past the time and so i look out the curtains and there she was coming up over the mountains. there was a small glow of the sun coming up behind, but still she was visible to the naked eye!

Can't wait for a few more weeks when higher in the sky and i can have a look at her thru the scope

Asimov - look for the "I" shaped asterism as I pointed out in the charts (you should see this in binoculars first). Then go to the area I pointed out and surf around. It should be quite noticeable - probably resembling an oblong streak when you initially see it - then as you look at it more you can see the bipolar nature and some of the outcasts giving it the "squashed bug" appearence. Remember that I also pointed out where to find NGC 6337 in the chart as well, so don't go looking here for any bugs - make sure you are searching for NGC 6302

My problem Andrew was I could see too many "I"s. looked like a round planetary at 1st glance, then took on the squashed bug effect after a few mins of gazing.

Thanks Andrew. Yes sorry Dave, but I will be looking at Saturn this morn if the weather holds. Not going to bed, plenty of time for sleeping later.

We got up yesterday morning (1st) to check Saturn out. There it was near-ish to the thin crescent of moon. We looked through the scope and it was pretty shimmery being so low in the sky, and the rising sun warming up the foreground air. None the less, it's still a lovely view seeing those rings. Can't wait for it to get higher in the sky to get that Cassini.

I caught it this morning. Too low & too many trees to get a scope on it though.
