Trumpets - best place to buy?

Hi all

I'm sure there's a few musical types around here so hopefully someone can help me out.

My son Jacob plays the trumpet in the school training band, and next year will be in the concert band. We're hiring the trumpet this year but are likely to have to buy, or hire then buy next year.

What are the different types of trumpets and what are they worth?

We don't want or need a top of the line one but don't want a cheapy that sounds crap either.

We've been offered a 2nd hand Yamaha TR Student one that's only a year old, bought on sale from Macron for $649, but neither us, nor the sellers, know what it's worth 2nd hand ($400-$500?).

Are there any other places we should look, or avoid, for new or 2nd hand trumpets?

Thanks

There is a great place (or there use to be about a year ago) on Parramatta road (i can never spell parraammaatttaa). It specializes in wind instruments. Not sure of the name though. Next time I drive by I'll see if it's still there. I live just off paramatta rd.

• Honed pistons
• The precise fit between valve casings and pistons after honing means no air leakage.
• Pressure-formed tubing
• Perfectly rounded tubing results in less turbulence and a smoother air flow, thus allowing for an excellent scale and reduced resistance.
• Laser-fused pluzuma welded bell
• A high-energy laser fuses the brass together for a virtually seamless bell which allows continuous even vibrations.
• Nickel silver at stress points
• Nickel silver is a very strong material, and when used at stress points, makes the instrument far more durable.
• Delrin one-piece valve guides
• Delrin one-piece valve guides are durable and quieter than metal valve guides.
• First valve slide thumbhook
• Assists in intonation.
• SPECIFICATIONS
• Bore .459"
• Bell 4 7/8" yellow brass bell
• Pistons Nickel-plated pistons resist corrosion and are durable. Also available with monel pistons.
• Gold epoxy lacquer Microscopic, electrically-charged particles of epoxy lacquer are attracted to and deposited evenly on the surface of the instrument carrying the opposite charge. This produces an exceptionally thin, uniform coating that can be oven-hardened for maximum durability without compromising the instrument's sound. The sound produced is a solid, somewhat harder sound than silver plate finishes.
• Gold brass leadpipe Gold brass is extremely resistant to wear and corrosion, and when used in a leadpipe, it ensures long-term precision.

mate i've been playing for 13 years. my advice is to go to a music store, eg Allans music in melbourne, and get your son to have a play of some. Some trumpets are heavier than others, eg mine to assist with jazz and blues style playing. its is really a personal preference to the instrument. I know when i picked up my james morrison signature i loved it, could play the full range without a hassle, but i picked up another (can't remember the name of it for the life of me) and had a hard time with the top register.

Really he is going to want/need a Bb trumpet as a C is more for ochestral playing. Something with 1st and 3rd valve slides will be and advantage in the future. Also silvver plate is easier to take care of than the gold lacquer. Student trumpets are great no need to spend the big bucks if he's not going to hang with it. Yamaha are your best bet.

I'd stick with something along these

http://www.allansmusic.com.au/Produc...7E182&p=120147

http://www.allansmusic.com.au/Produc...7E182&p=103537 <---- would be a descent starting trumpet without breaking the bank

http://www.brassnwoodwind.com.au/YamTptYTR1335.html <--- my only concern with this is it only has 1 water key

http://www.brassnwoodwind.com.au/JTR410.html <--- this was my first trumpet.

Also consider getting a 5c mouthpeice to go along with the 7c if your son has or is going to need braces. The 10c is a slightly larger mouth peice with a deeper bore. It helped me when i had braces to get a clear tone without cutting my upper lip.

in relation to secondhand instruments, alot of music stores have secondhand ones. Also the local university music department may be able to point you in the right direction

feel free to PM me with any questions mate, happy to help

Hi Mike, Been through the same saga with my daughter who is now a Music teacher in Melbourne. She was and still is a Trumpet player. We originally bought her a King 600 American Jazz trumpet. I bought the more expensive model with the thought that in the worst case we would have an instrument which could be resold easily with minimal losses. Shop arround the major music stores in the country. ie Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane etc. The price for the same instrument can vary significantly, and being the end of the year some very good deals are available. Delivery will be by courier where ever you buy from. $600 to $700 should buy a reasonable instrument.

My daughter still uses the same trumpet today so the purchase was worth while. 6 years of high school band and 4 Years of university an it's going strong and is still a quality instrument.

I will keep my eyes open Mike.

If the lad has stuck at it and likes it personally I would get him something good... I started music in a brass band and always wanted to play trumpet but played a Bb baritone (I dont know if thats howit is spelt) because it was the only insrument available when I joined.

But I started guitar at about 11 my parents did not want me to play and I had to breed birds to raise the cash because they would not help at that stage...remember times were different and no parent wanted their kid to become and Elvis or the like...I bought my guitar with my money and when my parents saw I was not going to quit they bought me a nice F hole arch top about 12 months later I was dedicated and geting that good guitar made me leap ahead... the first guitar was terrible but it was all I could afford (you dont make much breeding birds) and it was hard to keep enthusiastic... if it were not for the occassional trip into a shop to play a decent guitar I would have given up ...but I had something to look forward to so I hung on.... my point is get the best you can that he likes and suits him. Take the time with him to take him window shopping and encourage him to dream about this or that...like we do over a Paramount and a classic scope etc... I think you will gauge if he will hang on.

Over the years music and the ability to play has turned out to be my greatest treasure ...my guitar cures my sadness, lonliness and even dispair it brings me joy and creativity...and it allows me to meet people anywhere I go it becomes such a personal thing... the stories I could tell about going to some country pub with the guitar and the parties etc ..it has been a ticket to a wonderful life.
I never have done it for a living but it is more valuable than money because of the doors it opens.

2 Stores that I know of Mike,

One's on Crner Parramatta Rd and Pyrmont Bridge Rd, Annandale - Billy Hyde Drum Clinic. There is also a store in Willougbhy.

There is another music store 2 shops down from Astro-Opticals at Crowsnest - can't remember the name. You could treat yourself to something whilst your there !

Cheers, Norm

Hey Mike!

I took up the trumpet for a year or so before we had kids. Sleeping babies, commuting and trumpet practice just did not mix, so I sold it.

I bought mine from a store about 10 minutes walk from St Leonards station. I cannot recall the name of the store, but you should be able to find it by Googling.

You can buy trumpets by instalment payment plans to avoid having to shell out the whole amount in one hit. I think my trumpet was about $600ish, that was about 11 years ago, so I guess that would be $800 or $900 now. It was very happy with that quality of instrument. I suspect it would be a mistake to buy anything too tinny. In that regard I completely agree with Alex.
