and its the first clear sky in nearly two weeks

Daylight saving????

The correct term is 'Night-time Wasting'.

Depends on your circumstances. I can never get out before ~8:30pm because of having kids homework etc. It means for me that I can image stars just after dark low in the west before they set. This is an advantage for comets and some variable stars.
Each has their own preference.
I would rather LESS CLOUD!!!!

This is my situation - I get home from work about 6, and am only able to start astronomy at about 8:30. Daylight saving just means I'm able to go for a ride between getting home and astronomy too! So I have to admit I don't mind it. I am glad I chose to structure my astronomy around automated imaging, so providing I have time to start it going, I don't need to stay awake for the rest of the time.

However even though I don't mind it, I also don't mind not having it, and it's a pain changing clocks, and there's no point in it. I'll be voting against it (again) in WA's referendum coming next year.

It was a pain down at the ASWA Astro Camp last weekend, it meant we went to bed at 2am but had to get up an hour rearlier and out of the place an hour earlier! That was annoying to loose that hour of sleep.

Roger.

We've had DST for so many years back home in UK, that its something that 'just happens'.

The debate on 'for or against', has rumbled on for decades, and is likely to do so for decades to come.

Personally, I'd prefer the clocks to be left permanently on DST (1 hour ahead of GMT), as in winter, that extra hour of daylight at the end of the day, is far more useful than having that hour in the morning.

In the Northern Hemisphere, around the time of the shortest day (Dec 21st) , its getting dark at around 4pm at 52 degrees north, so having it get dark at 5pm would be preferable, and have little or no impact on my astronomy.

Having spoken to quite few people here in WA, opinion seems to be very divided, and it will be interesting to see which way the vote goes.

I've never really seen the point of having DST in Australia, don't think its far enough south to warrant it. There is a great deal of difference in Summer/Winter daylight hours in the likes of Scotland and further north and probably in the south island of NZ, but the Aus mainland doesn't really need DST IMHO.

Its all ying and yang cows give less milk and our curtains fade more

Though birds don't chirp there heads off at 4.30 am any more and its is possible to get a little done indoors before it gets dark leaving a little more time outside ..but then people generally stay up a little later makeing for more light pollution

personally I like daylight saving. we have always had it so I don't know any different. I'm in the South Island of NZ so astronomy begins a lot later but I never get to do much before 9 pm with kids and all that goes with running a house etc... Besides I like not limiting BBQs to the weekend.

Here's a shot of the only thing visible in the sky at 9:15pm tonight . The moon venus and Jupiter.

Cheers

Being in Western Australia we get enough daylight as it is in summer, it's a pain when its still 35-40 and light at 9:00 at night

More daylight for us is a waste IMO
