64 Bit drivers for DSI II

G'day

I have recently upgraded my PC and Laptop and both run vista. After a real fight with the laptop (Vista 32) I managed to get the DSI working by manually placing the DsiUsb.sys driver in the system 32 folder and setting the program to run in XP service pack 2 compatable mode. This works for both envisage and MaximDL (I only use envisage live view for initial focus as I have not managed to get MaximDL autofocus to work properly with the JMI smart focus yet). I have also downloaded and installed all of the latest software from Meade. Unfortunately this does not include up to date drivers and I am still using the ones that came with the camera. I have Vista 64 on my PC and wish to upgrade the Laptop also but will not do so until I can get a compatable 64 bit driver. The above solution will not work for the 64 bit version.

Has anyone bought one of the new DSI III cameras and successfully tested the included drivers on a 64 bit operating system???

Mark, I doubt you'll be able to find 64bit drivers for the DSI camera. You could take a look at Meade's site, but I'm fairly certain there's no 64bit drivers. At least not lately, so far as I know. Quite frankly, I'd ditch vista (in either iteration) and stay with XP Pro SP2. At least then you'd know everything would work.

I would love to stay with XP but it will not support the hardware in my PC unless I install the 64 bit version in which case I would be exactly the same position I find myself now. Still I have got it all working in vista 32 as long as I dont want to use MaximDL to run canon DSLR's but they (Diffraction Limited) have promised the fix is on the way so I dont see much value in reverting to XP on my laptop either.

What hardware requires you to install a 64bit operating system? The only reason you need a 64bit system is to address ram above 4gig.

You guessed it. 32 bit only supports approx 3.2 gig.

It really supports 4 gig but it needs to reserve address space for video ram etc so you only see about 3.5gig in task manager, depending on your video card and what else you have plugged in.

If your stacking images in maxim I understand why you want **** loads of ram. It's a hungry beast when working on big images isn't it.

Have you though about running a VM (Virtual Machine)? With XP SP2 on it under Vista, it's free and when you need to use the DSI you can just fire up the VM.

Problem 1: Corsair (manufacturers of the ram) state that warrenty will be voided if you run 4 gig of ram on a 32 bit system, I am running 8 gig of DDR2 1066. Let me say that it is very addictive as maxim runs faster on a 64 bit system even with the conversion taking place (32 -> 64 bit) and the ram makes things soooo much better and a lot lot faster(I am a very impatient sod).

Problem 2: I am about to RAID everything and I think this may cause real problems if I go to a dual boot system??? In any case I still have my Laptop running on vista 32 so I can capture the images on that (everything works)and process on the PC.

yeah i reckon the DSI III cameras got a good picture. it is definitely not a generation 1 DSI anymore.

I dual boot Win XP SP3 and WinXP 64 bit SP2 on my main machine (the Astro lab PC still uses Win XP SP3).

I went Win XP 64 bit as I don't like Vista 32 or 64 bit variants yet - too buggy on the network side to say the least and alot more costly.

Win XP 64 bit Pro cost $120 at Harvey Norman last week - hardest thing was to find Canon Printer drivers (even Canon tech support didn't know what to do - Canon Research told me simple - use Windows add printer - and select your Canon model - that driver works well!).

So now with 8GB RAM - there is alot more head room for photoshop - lets compare experiences and see how things go!
