hmm interesting thought.. when I was into online gaming, IRC was (and still is of course) very popular for clans and communities to hang out.

I'll give it some thought.. it's good in a way because people can chat realtime, but it's also bad in a way because it means they won't be posting on the forums, and so discussions are lost forever and people who want to read, or search etc, won't have those discussions as a resource.

hmm, anyway i'll think about it, thanks for the suggestion!

I like the idea of the chat room as well but agree with you iceman that posting may become less and the chat info is lost.

How about an alternative like a notice on the home or forum page for members to put up the times they are most likely to be cruising the site and have a posting area set aside for them to "chat away". If its just a general chat with little useful astronomy info in it the posting you could clear it later so as not to clog up storage space or if it does contain useful stuff store is as per the end of the next paragraph.

Or again alternatively set a particular topic that may have wide interest and nominate a time for members to login and participate in an active bullitin board type discussion. At least that way information wont be lost and it will almost be real time (might be hard to keep track of the flow of the discussion at times. Any discussions could then be held in a separate catagory for eg "Archived Bullitin Board Discussions" or such like.

Just a thought

Paul

Nah i'm not a CS'er, I only played that briefly between Q2 and RtCW, to keep me interested when Q2 was dying and before RtCW came out.

I played UT2004 briefly, but never got into it. The trickjumping just didn't do it for me.

If anyone played CS in 2000 or 2001 on the Optus servers in Sydney against a dude named "Loopy" or a group called the "CLAM Clan" then you got your butt kicked by me...

Actually funny story, I was diving with a mate in Sydney about 2 years ago, and he introduced me to another mate of his. The other mate is like "Loopy... where have I heard that name... did you used to play Counter Strike?" No joke, it was the wierdest thing ever!

Cheers,

Brad

IRC is great..been useing it for years but i tend to agree that if you do have a chat room their will be less posting....many benifits from a chat room though.

If one was introduced I will be checking to see who is on before even thinking about making posts......I think a chat room would be more realistic when the forums get larger.....then theirs room for both.

My Clan I left not long ago.
