Thumbs up Antares 1529

G'day Everyone,

is this achromat available in OZ? How much? From where?

http://www.agenaastro.com/Antares-15.../t-an-1529.htm
At CN the buzz is that for wide view is nice with "reasonable" CA.

I'm working on a big Cass. and don't have anything at this moment,
looking for a refractor portability and sharp wide field of view.

This may be it. Anyone has this in Australia?
I know the A$ is low,
but it should be competitive with other alternatives.

Mick.

Angry

Its an F6.5 150mm Achromat. Be weary when they say :

"The Antares 1529 is a pretty "fast" f/6.5 telescope that is well suited to wide field observations. Despite its short focal length, the Low Dispersion Achromatic objective performs very well with less chromatic aberration (false color) compared to other competitor's telescopes on brighter objects. This is the same objective that was used in earlier production runs, so there is no change in the optics.

Nice for 1 half of a super large binocular, but pretty dissapointing as a telescope I suspect

And its not really portable, save your money for a smaller aperatue semi-APO so popular today...........

Max,
I understand what you saying, hoverer a 6" glass is , well 6"!!!
Get a 5" apo for 2 times the price is still a 5" and low power shouldn't
be much a different.
For the same price there is a 80mm apo, and IMHO for deep sky just
no contest.
6" achro same price as the ~12" dob. Sure, the dob is going deeper,
but I already have a mirror.
Just imagine, 6" refractor+17mm Ethos..... 2+ deg field of view, and
at low power no CA issue....

I know you are dreaming of 150mm. Go for the binocs realy, low powered wide fields of view and much more portable than a fat refractor on an even heavier mount. I think your 12" dob might be more portable? The only reason I mention it is that after a 12" dob I bought a 120mm F5 achromat. Slightly faster than the F6.5. It only gathers dust and gets pulled out as a mega-guide scope. So promising yet so little used. But if you are eager I'll offer it to you at a discount rate...............

Max,
my mirror is not a dob. See my sign.
The big DK Cass. is in working progress
Yeah, a bit more than I can chew on....
I had a 12" f5 dob, did not like it.
The 12.5" Cass. is f16 and I hope one day I can make high res. pics
with it. Not there yet....
Hoverer I crave for a big glass. I had a 5" f8 Konus before. A lemon.
I analyzed, recalculated the ROC's of all 4 surface etc.
Originally I assumed it has a zonal error, turned out it had a different radius at 50% dia. No use for readjust the shims for better correction!

I just can't give up on a big well corrected Fraunhofer!
