Sun Spots 19/08/05

Nice group of sun spots which seem to have appeared over night, yesterday there was an appearence of a small one in the same location, today there are what looks like 5 or 6 out shining the one that has been transits for several days now.

Yeeerah! The Moon left them behind last night and the Sun smacked into them this morning sometime

Bummer! Houghy... and all I got is some baader film.

Only being into solar observing 5 minutes, man these things are expanding. Now two groups. with another three small and seperated appearing either to the SE or NW. A total count 9-10

I guess they must do, my first look today was around 2-2:30pm.

I've seen through two-three solar scopes before, Astro-south's out at Leyburn and a PST in earlier Feb, And Houghy's PST at AstroFest. Where I brought some film, only made the filters up last week and there wasn't much to look at. Then I looked earlier this week and there were a couple of small ones. although I'm not really sure what is big and what is small yet. They have been transiting from left to right as you look through the ep. Yesterday one disappeared out of view. And I noticed a faint one where these groups appear to have form and these ones are some what bigger.

how does film compare to a pst?

It doesn't. The PST's is madness with the film you see only sunspots. But I made two. One 80mm off axis, the other pretty much full apperture but slightly clipped. The full apperture shows heaps better detail and some faint ganulation.

Update: 5:56am 20/08/05 looking alot bigger today, just waiting for the sun to rise to get a look.

Here's a few snaps of the two major groups, taken around 9:00am this morning. Using a Canon Powershot A85 held up to an ep.

Had a nice-ish observation of M42 this morning, Moon was getting low in the west kinda washed it out really, but was able to tease out quite a bit of neblousity around the Trap using an UHC filter
