Downgrade to XP

Bought a Toshiba Satellite M300 laptop with the discs to downgrade to XP from Vista Business.
My question is if I do downgrade, does this wipe all data from the hard drive?

Down we go!!

Yes, I do believe that you lose the lot as it will be a clean install.
Burn what you can to a DVD or an external hard drive if you have it. If its not alot to burn, try a 4Gb USB stick.

Not worried about files, just a program that I have installed, Trend Mcro Internet Security Pro.
Have used/registered it on 3 computers, 2 desk tops and the laptop which is what I'm allowed with the single purchase, it is liscenced till 2010.
Have emailed Trend regarding the same if I wipe off the program but have not had a reply (3 weeks ago)

Grant,

We bought 3 of the Toshi's for work, they fly with XP compared to Vista.

FWIW I'd make a Vista recovery disk set from the icon on the desktop, just in case, sometime in the future, you need Vista reloaded.

If you have data you want to keep, make sure you back up, as I seem to recall that the downgrade erases the HDD.

One of our Toshi's didn't come with Business, I was unable to install from a normal XP pro disk (I didn't try all that hard though, as I discovered that the downgrade that came with business also installed no problems with the Vista Premium optioned Toshibas).

As for the AV suite, I wouldn't lose too much sleep, you can download AVAST and it's free for home use, got very good reviews (came out on top actually) in a recent magazine shootout and treads very lightly on resources.

Nods, forget Tend Micro, it doesn't protect you and costs too much. Avast and AVG are free. I use AVG and version 8 is working pretty well but none of them can guarantee 100% protection.

There is no upgrade or downgrade option to/from xp/vista. It's a wipe and reinstall job. You may have to change BIOS settings going from vista to xp as AHCI is hard drive option that xp will only understand with add on drivers where as Vista knows about it out of the box. Change AHCI to IDE in BIOS.

Further to what Robin added re-bios changes, with the Toshiba downgrade install, no setting changes are required, however there is a single page instruction that came with the laptop which should be followed.

When you try to install Trend on a new computer that excedes your license you get the choice to transfer the license from an existing one.

My Toshiba a300 ...... I upgraded to XP (not downgraded ) only cause i love XP and starry night works well on it my thoughts are...........If your going to XP dont delete the 2nd partition , thats where the vista install files are and you can always get back to them for later......now ive looked at the disk manager and ive still got the 2nd partition there and the vista files are there sleeping, to check the partition go
right click on MY COMPUTER / MANAGE / DISK MANAGEMENT

This should show the partitions if ever you do the downgrade.

Then i got told if i ever want to go back to vista without recovery disks hold the 0 button whilst powering up that way it will boot from the 2nd partition but it will FORMAT and delete the HDD

P.S only what the dealer told me .......small advice from a dealer only...get more advice b4 attempting it.

Cheers Kev.
