Apologies if this isn't appropriate (just ignore me), but how could Hawking collect on his bet? You can't really prove the non-existence of anything.

Then again, he's a lot smarter than me. HE didn't buy a PST just before the clouds rolled in.

I think Hawking is betting against the theory that postulates the existance of the Higgs boson.

Hawking has a history of making (and losing) bets.
