Eagle Nebula Full Frame

Eagle Nebula. Compiled image from 10 X 10 min exposures taken with QHY8 and Vixen VC200L Full frame at f9. I am getting to love this little scope. It is a keeper. Taken 0n 6-9-2008 under a pretty bright moon. Again this image has had no calibration files applied as something went wrong with these files.

Hi Doug, I still call this a very nice natural looking image with heaps of detail.

Can you tell me what is the calibration files, and what would they do to this image?

Hi Lester, Calibration files, Flats, Darks and Bias files. Darks well you know what they do but running the camera at -40C I don't find them absolutely needed but they can make mall improvements and assist with removal of hot pixels but again they can be removed with the Photoshop clone tool.
Flats and bias files can assist with the nomalising of gradients and normalising vignnetting. I removed most of the problem in this image by clipping the black a little.
Sometimes I wonder why we bother with all these files but when all is equal they do improve an image when done correctly.

Looks good Doug, perhaps a little lumpy if that's the right word, I'm not sure how to describe it. Did you do a Gaussian Blurr or something.
When you say you were running the camera at -40C did you mean 40C below ambient temperature i.e. was the ambient temp 0 degrees when you were imaging . Most CCD cameras can only get to those kind of temps with water cooling, does the QHY8 have water cooling option ?

Super picture ... what filter if any ?

Yes the camera runs at about 40 below ambient and yes ambient was below 0 on the night. It was cold.

Filter. Just an IR blocking filter. The moon gradient was washed by clipping the black a little.

Looks crisp Doug, but what's with the FOV. My VC200L Suburbian Eagle and the black version were taken with a focal reducer and looks to be almost the same FOV. Shouldn't yours be twice as close?

I don't know how that works Robin unless you are using some extra extenders in the focal path which is lifting the f ratio back up but then again it is not a huge reduction in focal length from 1900 to 1200 with the FR.

Those VCLs are cool scopes and I have seen lots of good images from them.

Vixen also makes a 300mm one.

My bad, I thought the reducer halved it to 900, but it's really ~1800 to ~1300.
That VMC330L is listed on opt for US$14000
