worm and wheel gears

Does anyone know the name of a worm & wheel gear manufacturer, I understand that Byers has retired. I need to improve goto precision on my 20" newtonian.

You can still get the Byers gears. Check ebay for adverts.

Then you can also get them from here http://www.aeroquest-machining.com/page11.html .

But the worm and wheel is not going to give you accuracy in goto. It will only give you very good PEC.

If you want accuracy, then look at high ratio gear boxes, and high count optical encoders,. Of course, your mount has to be made right (All perpendicular) and of course good alignment.

Yep - I've alwas seen a few Byers Co. gear sets available on eBay and AstroMart. Not cheap though - I saw a 7.5" set going for around US$1,600 a while back.

They are not cheap are they?
After pulling apart the base of my old C8, I considered putting in a better drive system (worm gear) but at those prices, I'd be better off getting a nice new EQ6
