HELP Adelaide

About 9 weeks ago (been that long getting repaired), i dropped my CG5 Computerised Go-To mount and damaged the motors, so i sent it off to the sunny state for repaires. I got it back monday and decided tonight was the night too check it out..(no rain)...Well after having both motors replaced the damn thing runs like a bucket of....The Dec motor is not engaging properly, can hear it working but not moving all the time or some times.
My problem is i am not wanting too send mount back up there and take several weeks for its return, so is there a place in Adelaide that can look at , and repaire (if possible) before next friday, when i go on holidays...

cheers darrell

Are there any major telescope dealers in the area? Or maybe even a camera shop, alot of them deal with and sell telescopes.

Try OpticSA on Henley Beach Rd, may be in PH Book as Shellap. They are JUST over South Rd coming from the beach on the left hand side.
MMMMMM......you may also have to learn how to do some maintenance/adjustments yourself.
Only other I can think of is Bintel in Sydney.
Hope that helps.

Sounds like the motors are working OK , just no meshing going with two brass gear wheels , this should be easy fixable by you (unless you killed the axis of the worm gear/s (bent it - which means another worm gear must be had for the DEC axis, a disassembly job .... bad news.

Does the Dec worm axis wobble when you turn it manually ?

You need to adjust the drive gear wheel so it is lined up (in two axes) and meshing properly with the wheel attached to worm.

If the worm gear axis is straight and true -The problem is the meshing or lack there of for the brass gear wheels (held in place by a allan screw and are relatively easy to adjust and remove - If they are like my old CG5).

There is not much you can do with the motor positioning but if you can get at the screws holding it to the plates their fixing and position can be slightly adjusted too.

I don't know why Celestron mounts are so fragile , you would think they would make allowances for the occasional drop or rough treatment in transport ....

If you can't fix it yourself , get accident insurance cover added to your contents (if you don't already have it) and have the mob in Qld put together a report saying the CG5 is unrepairable and a quote to replace it with mount at least as good.
Shipping from SA to Qld of a GEM's head is not cheap and you shouldn't have to send it back if they fixed and adjusted it correctly the first time.

Thanks All for replies...I decided too pull covers off and have a look, and discovered the grub screw in motor gear was not done up properly, and motor gear not pushed up tight against other gear. A little push, turn and tight and all is a going...
I am a happy chappy again.
Pity about the rain..lol

And it may just happen that an IIS member works for your Insurance Company AND also just happens to have your claim fall on his desk. AND!!! Just happened to have read this thread.

KNOCK! KNOCK!
Who's there?

FraudBusters...who?

I just hope some here take my advise and add accidential damage to their contents policies - nothing fraudulent about making a bonefide claim , I'm dambed glad I have the option , and have claimed on it a few times since I added it , once for astrogear.

It could well have been that the mount had serious mechanical damage and beyond a certain point it becomes uneconomic to repair even a gem , ie if it involves a lot of work or parts have to be made , or having to send it overseas to have it repaired. It is up to the repairer and owner to make to make that assessment.

You would have thought the repairer would have checked that .... says a lot about their (lack of) quality control.
