Discovered By: independently by several Japanese observers using
unfiltered CCDs:
-- K. Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, and F. Kabashima,
Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken
-- H. Nishimura, Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken
-- K. Haseda, Toyohashi, Aichi; via H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University

Discovery Date: 2008 May 25 (JD 2454612)

Discovery Magnitude: approximately 10.2 (visual estimate)

Position: R.A. = 17h 39m 50.93s ; Decl. = -23o 50' 00.9" (J2000)

Thanks Stephen! A second new one in Ophiuchus has just been reported - discovery mag 11.3 and not far from the first.

Hmmm, seems I got both of them in an image taken on 28 May, three days before the discovery of the second one! Never know what you'll find! At this time, Nova Oph 2008 seems about mag high 10s, while Nova Oph 2008 No 2 is around low 12s, still brightening (it has now dimmed off a fair bit from the discovery mag of 11.3).

Must happen often, considering the number of widefields that would be taken around the world every night. Recognition is the key, LOL!

Have attached my original N Oph 2008 image, and the amended one with both novae.
