Laser pointers will be banned

This was mentioned at the Newcastle Astro Society meeting last night

being a member will NOT do anything. Each individual is meant to apply for a Prohibited Weapons Permit so we were told.

Bob Debus doesnt know what day it is, look at the gaffe here

Quote:
"I have written to police ministers calling on them to put in place legislation which imposes fines and jail terms for possessing pointers above one megawatt without an appropriate exemption," Mr Debus said.
One Megawatt, gee, even the US doesnt use lasers that powerful to shoot down missiles, they are "only" rated at 100 Kilowatts. I wonder if when applying for a laser pointer you put in the description field "Death Star Superlaser"
Reason for possessing "Destroying planets hostile to the Empire"
Power output: 2.4E32 joules.

Who knows, they might approve it!

Certainly if it was a 1 Megawatt green laser for astronomy purposes, the helicopters and planes that have been "targeted" by the fools in the past would be a smoldering cloud of ashes wouldnt they?

Look at the upside though.... The 999.9 Kilowatt laser I have is LEGAL!!!! wooohooo! anyone want to borrow it?

As my Electronics Instructor used to say "Don't be too proud of this technological terror you have constructed"

Maybe I should change my avatar picture too????? Just a thought?

cheers

Chris

To be fair, I think Bob was misquoted there. Here at the origional site the maths is correct...
“I have written to Police ministers calling on them to put in place legislation which imposes fines and jail terms for possessing pointers above 1mW without an appropriate exemption.”

IMO if you don't understand the lingo, you simply aren't qualified to even talk about the technology let alone legislate on it. Probably a better move would be some legislation banning pollies of low IQ and integrity, then again if they did, we probably wouldn't have a parliament....
