May 1 Jupiter, Brisbane, 2am

Still waiting on Brisbane turning on the seeing

The usual: C9.25, 3x barlow, ToUcam Pro II, processed in Registax 4 and PS7.

I'm lucky at the moment, as I'm on a couple of weeks' holiday. So I'll just keep setting up and crossing my fingers that a great night is on its way

I've got some more data to work through, including DMK. I managed to capture the emergence of Ganymede from behind Jove...so hopefully I've got a nice clear 'pimple' shot in amongst the AVIs I've captured.

Hey Matt

You've managed to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse despite the seeing, which was so poor that I gave up last night at around 1:00am, well before Jove even cleared the tree line.

Cheers

Dennis

Matt, looking good, especially colour balance which I always struggled with my Toucam. Is your DMK mono or colour ... look forward to seeing more!

cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob...and thanks.

I have the mono (firewire) DMK 21AF04.

I captured some AVIs last night and tried using 30fps at 1/30th with the Astronomik Type 2 RGB filters and 3x Televue barlow...but the image was quite dim and I used too much gain to try and get a reasonably full histogram.

From memory, I had the gain set around 980 for red, 930 for green and close to 1000 for blue.

Needless to say the final aligned and stacked images looked very grainy...even taking into account the DMK's comparatively low noise characteristics.

I think I'll back off to 15fps and 1/15 sec exp until Jupiter brightens just a little more...or step back a notch with the barlow. Perhaps go back to the 2.5x powermate. Sacrifice a little focal length for a brighter image and faster exposure...for another month or so.

Hi Matt, it must be the fact you're using a 3x barlow and getting larger image scale than dimming things down for you, so yes give the 2.5x powermate a go... prob the best way to go with the rubbish seeing

cheers,

Rob
