Skyview 2 power supply

Guys, I need a gso skyview 2 battery power supply and cable to plug into the unit. Can anyone help me with the amps and volts needed. I think it is 12v but that is all I know. Had a look at the motors and the label on them is..

MOTOTECH
S35S7-6012A
1AJ0AA

Went to Jaycar but they could not help me on the label. Has anyone got a different way of powering the mount by larger batteries, gel cel etc, etc.

For future project, has anyone converted this mount to GOTO and if so, what motors fit and what equipment would I need

Regards
Kon

power supply.....

Kon - I have no idea about the power requirements of your particular unit, but if it is a 12 volt unit it would be very unlikely to draw more than a few amps.

If you can establish whether it is 12V, then very likely one of the car "jump-starter" units from an auto shop (Super Cheap, Sprint, etc.) will do. What were you powering it with before? - presuming you were, that is. The number of "D," "C" or whatever cells (batteries) it used will give you the operating voltage of the unit: 4 batteries=6volts, 8=12volts etc.

These car "starters" come in various "capacities" with the larger ones being able to deliver several amps for extended periods: certainly enough for most mount requirements. Once you've ascertained whether it's 12 volts or not; the other thing is to make sure the polarity of the plug on the lead from the power source into the mount is the correct polarity.

Most of the auto jump-starters use an accessory lead and plug that you can power devices such as your mount. They are, in general, "positive tip" "male" plugs that go into whatever you're operating (in this case your mount) and that is likely what any "female" socket in a mount requires. So hopefully this type of set-up will provide for your requirements.

Just check the voltage and plug tip polarity requirements first! These auto shop jump-starters are very reasonably priced - much cheaper than the so-called purpose built units sold by some telescope retailers.

Cheers, Darryl.

skyview II mount

Thanks Darryl,

I have checked in the web and it is a 12V unit. I bought the mount 2nd hand.

I do have a Gel cell with 12v 7A label on the front. I think it could be a bit to much for the motors but I am not electrically minded.

I also have a standard flat dovetail on my newtonian which does not align with the mounting screws. Is there a adapter with a eq5 styls mount round mount or will I need to start drilling holes in the dovetail.

Regards
Kon

Hi again Kon - the gel-cell battery (7aH) will suit the unit fine; though if the motors draw more than an amp or two, the battery will not last a great length of time in continuous use.

I don't quite inderstand the question about the dovetail bar - that just should fit in the mount recess and be tightened/secured with the mounts pinch-screws. Maybe someone else can answer, or a bit more info - don't start drilling holes yet!

Cheers, Darryl.

Skyview 2 mount

I will give it a go with the gel cell, thanks.

I worked out the mounting problem, all I needed to do was remove the dovtail bar and my mounting ring attached perfectly(silly me).

For a future project, has anyone turned one of these mounts into a GOTO and if yes, what equipment did you use as the motors are inside the mount in a rectangular space behind the power and controller panel.

Regards
Kon
