going to the dark side

just put myself down for a Qhy 8- a cooled CCD

no more dark frames

no more DSLR focus

wonder what new challenges lie ahead?

a big hole in the wallet but not an SBIG sized hole--if you get my drift....

Are you certain about that? I though dark frames were still useful.

Good luck with the CCD

If they still take dark frames at Keck I can't see us mortals doing without them. There will still be hot pixels and cold pixels that will need to be dealt with along with bias frames.

But enjoy it anyway Narayan I certainly look forward to your review.

oh I suppose instead of taking one to one and a half hours plus worth of dark frames, a couple should suffice ..but I do hear of folks not taking dark frames at all

anyway I will soon know for sure

The tax return is likely to be later in the year. July is when the work bonus comes through.

here are the specs-its 6 mega pixels

http://web.aanet.com.au/gama/QHY8.html

and the prices are here

http://web.aanet.com.au/gama/prices.html

probably be the week after next before I get it and will provide a report once I do

I spent a long time tossing up between the DSI III with an aftermarket outback cooler, the QHY 2 Pro and finally went with the QHY 8-mainly influenced by some very nice results people are posting in H alpha with this camera (given I hardly get any imaging opportunities it seems that any imaging I do these days is in H alpha)

besides its been around for a while now so hopefully production issues have been fixed

Narayan
