Viewers vs Posters, 10 to 1 ????????

WHAT is this about, on average viewers out do posters by 10 to one. OK, view something soso, cant be bothered repliing?, fair enough .

But 10 to 1 ?, sheesh all you lurkers, lets see your opinion, be it images or crazy assed left field opinions, speak up .

..I suspect that if ALL 4000 members posted at once we'd have a server meltdown ...and some (unlike me) prolly know it's better to learn by watchin ....while others' make the 'dumb' posts err, like this one...

as in every population, there's a hard core tiny group always active, and ever larger progressively less-involved layers ...

I probably read 20+ threads for every time I post. I don't always have something constructive to add.

Mmm - I'm not into imaging, I'm into visual astronomy

Still, I look at many of the images posted to see what's in them - as to their quality I do not think I am in a position to comment since I barely know what it involves, other than endless patience and miles of wiring...

In short - if a discussion arises regarding an image's contents, I may reply... most of the time though it seems the discussion focuses on the quality of the image, to which I feel I have little if anything to contribute

There is a certain evolution about a site and it's members, I believe. While there are certainly many who rarely post, you will also find those who have been very heavy poster who don't post as often these days and allow others to comment.

I also think you might find that activity in posting may also closely reflect activity in astronomy. I know for myself that with so little practical astronomy being carried out I find myself less inclined to actively participate in forum discussions. This doesn't mean however, that it still isn't enjoyable reading various thread.

Hi,

I'll second that, I read the forum one or twice a day, but don't post unless I can think of something worthy. Maybe thus encouraged I can try a bit more.

What well known band put Oscar Wilde's quote in a lyric ? -

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

Cheers

its fairly normal across internet communities. remember also the read count is a fairly rubbery figure.. its not how many unique views the thread has had. the person posting 3 times in the thread might have viewed it 20 times reading replies.

also a lot of people might be having a quick look during short breaks (work )

this site seems to index well with google (instantaneous the other night - google analytics?) so, a lot of traffic from there to any page mentioning a product, technique, space object.

but yeah theres always a lot of lurkers. thinking about it theres places i almost never post to. others i probably talk too much

It would be nice to see some of the newer members posting some more.

It's always good to here new opinions and ideas.

Cheers

Just because you are a new member doesn't mean that you have any new ideas. All my ideas and knowledge in astronomy are all outdated. I am trying to pick up as much of the new technical stuff as I can, being a lurker, if on the rare occassion I have something to contribute I have done so. Most of the new members come onto this site to get ideas and learn, and in time will, hopefully, contribute some of their gained knowledge to other new members.

Just my penny worth.

I have to agree with Aster. Since I found this site I come here usually once a day. I don't usually post though unless I can contribute something - which rarely is the case since I just don't have the experience or knowledge yet. I have learnt a lot in quite a short period of time just by browsing here but I'm by no means an expert - yet

I would have to disagree lads, there have been a number of members who have joined and brought with them a wealth of talent and ideas which I believe would have benefited many other members myself included. Three such members of the top of my head would be Jase, Fred (Bassnut) and Peter (Peter Ward). My apologies to those I may have missed.

There may well be other new members as well doing degrees in Astronomy and Physics that we don't know about either, I would certainly like to hear their ideas, thoughts and current thinking as well as any others out there who are thinking of joining.

Cheers

Ah yes, what control she has over her voice.....

The Pretenders, "Message of Love". There is a charismatic video around of them in the recording studio doing this, with James Honeyman-Scott doing his thing.

Cheers
