The Sea Gull Neb First Attempt 95 Minutes

Hi Guys.

Lately I have been imaging the easy stuff, and with reasonable results, so it was suggested by Mr Easystyles, Eric, and Mike, the boss that I try for something a bit deeper.

After a few excuses about to much light pollution, and that I couldn't go that deep because of it, I gave it a go anyway.

This is the first time I have gone this long on any object, a total of 19 exposures at 5 minutes each, that's 95 minutes total

add the ICNR, and it was a run of 3 hours and 10 minutes.

So here we have the Sea Gull Neb, 19 exp @ 5 mins each, at 400 ISO, with Tak 106 and Canon 5D, on the G11 and guided with WO 80mm, and Toucam.

Processed in Image Plus, with Flats/Darks etc and finished off in PS2.

It is not that flash, so please be kind.

but feel free to comment either way.

19x5mins with ICNR on eh?
Did you stand by the scope for all of those 3 hours?

Hi leon , thats really isnt a bad image at all. the seagulll head is veryy dim nebula and coming from an unmodded DSLR, thats quite alot of photons already. i know jase posted his awesome shot of it same goes with other modded DSLR users, but from an unmodded dslr point of view, that pretty good.

Thanks Guys, i appreciate your responses, and thanks Eric for your explanation regarding the capture of those elusive photons, get the 5D modded you reckon, sounds like something I might just think about.

Yep Doug, I did stay up with the set-up, although I have to admit I might of had a snooze in the chair once or twice.

Well well Leon. After our brief PM discussion on this target sometime ago, I'm pleased you finally gave it a go. A pleasing image. Its an interesting one to process due to the dynamic range present. You'll find a basic DDP stretch will not handle the object well. You may need to layer different features to manage the range. Happy you have decided to image something different than the "mainstream" objects. Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks Jase, I'm going to give it my best shot on some difficult targets, and hope for some pleasing results in the up coming future. I have been told by some that it takes a while to get a handle on this processing stuff.

Mike, Ric, thank you, yea, Mike I went for it, and can see some pleasing results in the future, the Sea Gull is a tough little bugger though.

Great to see you venturing out into a different area Leon.

I think you have done well with this image and l'm sure you will get great satisfaction as you try other various targets.
