203mm f4 Newtonian with tripod

I've got exactly the same setup as this item sold on ebay. The only differences are:

1)mine has been used a little.
2)mine is green(both mount and OTA)
3)mine has Bintel(GSO) Craiford focuser installed. The original R&P focuser will be also included.

Extras: 10mm, 15mm, 25mm eyepieces and 2x Barlow(a plastic one). Plus moon filter (corrected: there are no color filters included with this scope, just a moon one).

Finder has a small crack on a lens but it's hard to notice and it does not affect a view through it. Also a secondary mirror holder has cracked a little but still works fine. Just needs more attention when it's collimated.

Any reasonable offer will be considered :-)

I can sell it with both focusers or just with original one to make the whole setup cheaper.

It's still for sale.

I guess it will be much easier for everybody if I tell that I'm looking for something above $300 with both focusers and above $230 with a original R&P one. Please note that price for the Crayford focuser itself is $99 from Bintel so getting the 8" f4 Newtonian with equatorial mount for $200 is a bargain.

It's all packed in one 800x400x500 mm box and it weighs 28kg.

Yes, it's still for sale. Pick up is in Seabrook. Not sure what type of mirror it has but I will check it today. There is some comma at the edge of the field which I guess is ok for this type of optical design but I can't tell you how much. This is my first reflector and I have nothing to compare it with.

I did all my best to collimate it with a laser collimator and it seems not bad at all. I can get stars to pinpoints in the middle of the field. However I believe that anyone with better experience in reflectors and their collimation could do it much better.

I checked a mirror type. It's really hard to say without getting it from a tube but it seems it's a parrabolic one.

It is my understanding that F4 + Mirror = coma.

It is the price to pay for a physically shorter, optically faster scope with a wider field of view. (a function of optical physics, and regardless of the quality of the mirror)

It is not necessarily a bad thing, since a coma corrector, such as paracorr will remedy the problem, both for viewing and photography.

Sorry, I cannot tell you much about how good this scope is for astrophotography as I've never used this scope for it. I have a nice 8" SCT OTA for taking images and it's really hard for me to get used to the fact that all Newtonian reflectors have a focuser attached to the top.

However I guess it should work fine for astrophotography with a comma corrector.

I'm wondering if I could put my 8" Bintel GSO (dob- therefore altitude bearings in the way?) on this mount and add an RA motor drive? For observing all the sky and webcam imaging, mainly of the Moon. Comments on the feasibility? Is the mount likely to cope with the weight? Stable enough for the purpose? An economical entry into a GEM mount to build my experience?

Also I have a laser collimator for sale. It should be shown on a couple of pictures.

I was told that the Crayford focuser is a low profile one so keep it in mind if you need it.

Hi Eric,

I don't think it can really hold any 8" OTA especially if it's has something else mounted on it. It just seems to be dis-balanced with such a weight. Sometimes it starts sliding slowly because of it. However it should be ok with 6" or less reflectors or with 3.5" refractors. May be it can be properly balanced with 8" reflectors too but it's not possible with the weights that come with this mount.

The distance between the holes on the plate attached to the mount head is 136-137mm.

I would say that the mount itself is not bad at all and it's quite steady if you don't overload it

If needed I can take a zoomed picture of any part of it or you can come to my place to inspect it.
