I'm originally from Melbourne and now live in Sydney. Everyone here tells me how bad Melbourne weather is; well i reckon they wont be saying much about that at the moment. If you look at the posts there are very few photos from Sydneysiders in the last 3 months. Eric has probably posted more than all of us put together.

Good work Eric

Nice galaxy Eric !

I haven't been out the back for quite a while now, I've been reconnecting with my musical side ( composing ).

What are your settings for auto guiding - EQ6 and software ? I became frustrated with my setup as I was only getting about same exposure lengths with XCM2000 as I was with 350D before trailing became a problem and your guiding is always spot on so I thought I'd ask .... might get me on the right track next time I venture out.

Cheers

Eric, you have done a good job, but galaxies need small pixels and a heck of a lot of focal length (2500 mm and up) to show real structure.

At an FL of 1100 I am looking at a lot of surrounding field, but not much galaxy.

How about wacking in 2x barlow?

Thanks Peter, yes a 2 x barlow is on my mind. lets say my scope is a F5 with a 2 x barlow, whats the difference imaging through a SCT at F10?

hehe thanks davo. 5 x 4.7 = F23.5!!! imagine the length of exposure i have to do just to see some photons.

Prego!

And to answer your question: not a lot....but you'll no longer be looking at a teeny galaxy lost in a big field...

Nice worl Eric
Now thats what I like to see, a dedicated astro imager willing to safeifice other things to collect as many photons as possible
to go from f5 to f10 would need 4x the exposure to maintain the same "deepness". making the subs 4x longer might mean too much noise (unless its cooled)and possibility of guide errors, so instead could simply do 4x the number of subs (would be an all nighter on one object).

A F10 SCT may do better as its a sealed tube wheras a Newtonian is not (unless active mirror cooling is used)

I once did a few 1/2 hour subs on the Helix, but I compared the result with 3x 10 subs and the single 1/2 hour shot was noisier. That was with my camera though, Ive yet to test the cooled DSLR on really long subs.

Hi Eric

I played guitar for 22 years for a living but I also play a bit of keyoards, drums, bass, blues harp and I sing ( well used to, now I croak, no practice ). I just bought a Yamaha MO8 music production synthesizer that has re-ignited my writing interest. I also bought a Lexicon Lambda desktop recording setup with Cubase LE4 software so I can record guitar/keyboard/vocals etc direct to my notebook.
If that confuses you .... it means I can now record everything digitally i.e. no tape hiss and cut and paste editing etc. Brilliant !!!

As regards the guiding, I checked your website after I posted the question and found your tutorial, cheers mate. The thing I was curious about was your guide image timing interval settings i.e. 1 sec 2 sec 3 sec .... I hope you get what I mean. It's been a while since I've done any imaging and I can't remember the specifics of the setup but my guide star would fairly quickly run off the guide chip when trying to do long exposures and the result would be bad trailing after about 30 sec. Ofcourse the smaller field of view of the XCM2000 doesn't help matters either. I found that track and accumulate mode was giving me better results than auto guiding which is not the idea of buying the camera in the first place. That takes me back to the same process as using the 350D and DeepSkyStacker in effect, the only difference being that the stacking was done automatically in CCDOPs and exposure times were also auto. Anyway I waffle too much !

Keep up the good work.

Yes totally agree with you scott. arh looks like the SCT's go well with CCDs only than with CMOS.

nice going Steve!. 22 years of experience must be pro yes, my guide image time intervals are set at 1sec or 0.7sec depends on how dark the sky is during that time. for 30sec shots, you shouldnt be getting any trailings at all. Are you sure the autoguider is doing its thing?

Was a pro .... recording ( top 40 ) .... T.V appearances ( CountDown etc ) .... a long time ago now though ! Always a musician at heart !

I believe the autoguide is working since I had a new cable sent to me by a helpful IIS member. I'll try and get out soonish and give everything a whirl again. Thanks for the tip on timing.
