Gadget Central .... a project of astronomical proportions.

I've had an unfinished section of the house for some time (7 years to be exact) so with the kids and particularly 2 year old toddler grandkids coming last Christmas I thought I might tidy up the Hi-Fi/Home theatre gear.

HRH looked at some books and together we drew a rough sketch of what has desired. Before starting construction this is how the area looked.

I framed the walls and hung the plaster, then jointed and sanded. The whole thing had to be done with a minimum of dust as the kitchen/dining room adjoins this area. The area to the right under the bullseye window is a daybed, an area to relax in the sun and read a book etc.

Next the arches were cut from MDF and some edge detail formed from MDF. Next came the corbels/Plinths and cornices.

Next the cabinets were made from Tas Oak (Eucalypt) and fitted. This was the most difficult part as I'm not a terribly good carpenter and the framer and plasterers work wasn't as good as I would have liked (no one to blame but myself as I did both).

Finished at last....

Next I made the doors and fitted them. The doors are on special hinges/tracks and slide in to the cupboard once opened. The equipment was installed together with a big screen ready fro the onslaught of the terrible twos. The drawers at far left and right hold DVD's and CD's, each bank of 3 holds around 230 DVD's. I still have some finishing off to do around the back and the daybed has to be upholstered.

I left the handles off while they were here, that foiled them.

They're practicing how to burn DVDs for when they get older Phil.

Beautiful work Phil. I'll know who to contact when it comes to putting the cornice up in the observatory now

btw I hope you tell Liz that she doesn't look anywhere near old enough to have grandkids. You do, but she don't
