Hi Mick,
I have one of these and used it for my imaging. Now I have a TV85 so the ED 80 5000 series gets to be my guide scope.
Good Points
Very little false colour.
Mechanically good, not excellent, rotating tube is usefull when imaging, retractable dew shield so collapses to a small size, screwable metal lens cap so can't fall off, vixen dovetail type foot so dont need tube rings.
Fast, F6 is good for imaging.
Looks good, far better than the ED 80.
Focuser is good, not excellent.
true triplet
Bad Points
Has a lot of field curvature, but it's F6 so should expect this
No 10:1 focuser, but can get the knob from a GSO one for 20 bucks and fits nicely.
I imaged with it for 6 months before i got my TV85. You will definately want a field flattener and depending on the camera may get vignetting. For imaging I was happy with it but cant recommend it for visual. The field is too curved and even my 16mm Nagler was unhappy. Also because it is 480mm FL you need a very high short FL eyepiece to get any magnification.
I would say it is a good scope (for the price). I originally got an ED80 and took it back after 1 day. I wasnt happy with the look or build quality of the ED80 and got the shiny Meade instead. So i cant really compare it optically or photographically to the ED 80.
If you look through my posts pre December, all my images were taken with it. You may also like to see the immediate improvement to my December and post december images simply from switching to the TV85. Maybe not really fair as the Televue is far more expensive and all images taken with it were guided.
All my imaging has been done with a 10 mpxl EOS 400d. On a smaller chip you may not see any field curvature.
Hope this helps
Paul
