12 Volt Hair Dryer

I know over the years finding 12v Dryers has been quite hard and often very expensive but yesterday I was in Whitworths (that boating accessory chain) and I saw them on special for $9.95 each.

Pretty good deal. I am not sure what the quality would be like but at that price its worth considering.

I paid $30 for mine and it is worth double that when you need it.. but two would be twice as fast...

I am thinking of getting one myself, but have read you need some ceramic type. Will any do?

Monte, you forgot to mention that Whitworths are in Drummoyne on Victoria Rd(I bought my 12 volt hairdryer there too, has not been used in anger yet. )They also have all sorts of nifty bits of stuff in marine grade stainless steel. Just up the road is Mr stainless which carry a reasonable range of stainless steel screws and bolts although a bit pricey.

The ones I saw were at Brookvale. They have many branches. There were about 20 in the display. Give other branches a call first if you plan to make a trip any significant distance.

I got one from a camping store in Dandenong Sth a couple of years back.
It works ok if you can power it from the car, but dont expect to run it from a power tank for long. I measured the current consumption on a power supply at 18 amps

18A - that's a hot one Geoff. They mostly seem to be 90-120 Watt - hence 8-10 Amp - still enough to warm the wires up almost as much as the air they weakly blow! And suck every electron out of that battery pretty quickly.

And if you have been used to using a 1200-1800 Watt AC one, the 12V one delivering a tenth of that, or less, is a bit of a disappointment. Just takes patience.

It seemed hit and miss to me whether a camping store carried one or not when I searched.

Thats for sure. Used to use it but it sucked my batteries dry very quickly so I wound up getting a set of dew heaters which I should have go in the first place.
In an emergency they may be OK but in my experience they only remove the dew for a short time before they have to be used again.
