Lunar: Clavius Mosaic

Hi all

Here's a 4-frame mosaic of Clavius, captured on the 30th December 2007.

Each frame had multiple alignment points, with approx 200 frames stacked on each point.

It's not as big and beautiful as Anthony's (Bird's) Clavius Mosaic from back in September, but i'm pretty happy with it as the seeing was only 6.5/10 or so. The new DMK21AU04 allowed me to capture at 60fps which helped to freeze the seeing during the 40 seconds or so of capture for each avi (approx 2400 frames in each avi).

Processed in Registax, AstraImage and Photoshop.

youve timed it just right to give us a bit of variety, its a good image with nice tones no blowouts and just dark enough in the craters, and plenty of detail

I don't know the name of the crater at upper left of Clavius (which impacts the Clavius crater wall) but the detail is terrific to show the features inside. Looks kind of like a cat's paw or a footprint.

Great image Mike. That was one of the the first lunar craters I saw when I got my 60mm 20 years ago and its always been a favourite. Looks like you could almost reach out and gather a handful of dust.

Thanks guys, I think it's my best Clavius capture to date.

I'm starting to get the hang of where and when to capture which lunar features, and exposing the histogram correctly, to get the tonal range that guys like Wes Higgins and Alan Friedman get every time. I really love their work.

For me, most definitely! I love it.

With the firewire, I *had* to capture to an external hard-drive for anything over 15fps, otherwise it would lock up. On the external hard-drive, I could capture at 30fps, but it took a click or two to get it working sometimes.

It also needed external power for the firewire powered hub (my laptop doesn't have a firewire port), and also the external hard-drive. Which was a pain when trying to use it out in the field.

With the USB version, I can capture to my internal drive at 30fps without any problem whatsoever, and I can even capture at 60fps to the internal hard-drive with minimal dropped frames (1-2%).

AND, I don't need any external power or hubs. Just plug it into the laptop, use a 5m USB cable, and i'm ready to go.

I'm very pleased I made the decision to move to the USB version.

Oh also, my firewire version was the non-AS version so was max 30fps - my new one can do 60fps, which is great for the Moon and Venus, and I even used it on the red channel on Mars last night - so I imagine i'll be able to use it on Jupiter at times, as well.

This image (and the other lunar ones) were captured at 60fps, using an astronomik Red filter.

That's one of the most impressive clavius pictures I have ever seen.Excellent!

I will buy a dmk camera soon.But I am not sure which type is the best for me.
However I think the DMK 21AU04.AS would be the best for me.Because my budget is limited.
