November photo challenge – the ones that got away!
Hi
Here are a couple of photos I took based on the theme “motion”, which didn’t make it into the challenge this month.
The red light patterns were produced by suspending a 3 LED torch on some fishing line from our ceiling fan and then making it swing, with the camera shutter open for 30 secs.
The waterfall was a 1 second exposure to give a sense of motion in the water.
All the entries look terrific this month - well done everyone, some real creative thinking at work amongst the camera crew this month eh!
Thanks, but I’ll stick with the seagull as that’s all I had at the time. Here’s another new one though, taken in the garage, tonight, lights out, with a slide projector illuminating the racket and the camera flash firing during the exposure!
The exposure was 1 second giving the trailed tennis ball and the flash then “froze” the ball in one part of its swing. The tennis ball was suspended from the rafters with some thin fishing line.
Canon 40D with EF-S 60mm F2.8 lens.
1 sec exposure at F16, ISO 100.

Thanks RB. I’ve been trying to source some 3rd party books or manuals on the 40D, as the Canon manual deals strictly with the menu and dial functionality. I didn’t find any, although Amazon shows that some are to be published in April 2008, as I would be interested in reading more about practical applications and how the more advanced functions can be put to use.
I'll post any references if I come across anything Dennis.
BTW another cool feature which some models have (not only the 40D) is Second Curtain Flash mode.
This fires the flash at the end of the long exposure rather than the beginning so you get a nice trail and then the object is 'frozen' at the end of the exposure.
