NZ Earthquakes

Does anyone else see a pattern forming here?

The New Zealand Earthquakes are following the fault line and in the last four days have increased in magnitude. Tonights one (10:29pmAEST Monday night) was on the mainland, not out in the ocean and it was 6.8

If this continues it's pattern up the fault line, what could be the result?

Any Kiwis familiar with this pattern previously?
Also, did any of you feel tonights 6.8?

Ken,

The shaky isles...

One needs to remember most of NZ is just one big fault line. As a kid living
in NZ earthquakes, earthquake drill at school, and tremors were just a part
of everyday life. Not sure if a kiwi would tell if it means anything as it sort
of a bit like living under a flight path you get used to it.

One of the wildest I remember is waking up to my old lady yelling at my
bedroom door "Earthquake! Earthquake!" as my bed slid across the floor
even my marshal guitar amp met me near the closet lol and that was about
12 foot of travel. That one opened up a 10km crack up in the north island.

But I suppose if I have noticed any pattern, the one that seem to happen
to the south of the south island are usually followed buy ones up near
Indonesia, Like the one that created the Tsumuni was preceded by an
8 magnitude quake off NZ. Plus the couple of more recent off shore quakes
up near Indonesia were preceded by one near NZ. I figure it to be as
one side of the plate adjusts near NZ it puts pressure on the other side
in this case near Indonesia. But I'm not an expert it just what I have
noticed.

regards,CS

Hi all,
As Rob says, it becomes part of the way of life.
I lived in the eastern "Bay Of Plenty" in the "60's", it was unusual to go more than 2 days without a tremor or two!
Sunday mass would result in the dads sitting in the outer seats to catch the statues if the fell. Quite an experience, I tell you.
Being on the edge of the Pacific plate does not help, as the Aussie plate is trying to smash into us.
See attached pic.
I also follow events around the "Rim of Fire"
As Rob says, there are pressure releases to equalize the plates, where there is a quake or eruption, there will be another in less than a week normally.

Thanks guys. It helps hearing from those that have experienced this.

Growing up in the western suburbs of Sydney (Seven Hills) we only ever had 2 or 3 tremors a year, and one largish Earthquake in all the time I was growing up there.

Where I am now, we have nothing.

I was just wondering if any of you were familiar with the pattern growing in the current NZ quakes. Thanks for the replies Rob and Adrian

My personal theory, call me a nutter if you like.
When you hear on the news that Whales have been beaching themselves, or other sea animals doing strange things, it won't be long before an earthquake occurs.
For eg. There was a small flurry of beachings in W.A. a week or so before the Tsunami.
I don't know if there is anything to it, I've only noticed the pattern in the last 6 years or so. It doesn't happen every time, so it may be a coincidence.
But maybe all this build up of energy in the plates plays havoc with their built in GPS?
I dunno.

jjj, I suppose to whales earthquakes are similar to tapping on the outside
of a fish tank, said to be not beneficial to the fish inside. Another cause
of whale beaching is military sonar during manoeuvres. If I remember
correctly the Americans and the the Aussies were doing such off the
coast of Queensland at the time.

Ken,

I see there has been a 7.1 mag earthquake off Sumatra in Indonesia this
morning. 9 days after the NZ one.
