Falls Creek and Mt Hotham

Hi all

Like the Lake Hume shots, here are some shots from our family holiday after the Border Stargaze, when we went down South and stayed at Bright, visiting Falls Creek on one day and Mt Hotham the next.

We loved it down there. Bright was a beautiful place. The kids had never been to the snow (or even seen it in real life), so they were very excited. We had a great time, would've loved to stay longer. I would've liked to do some skiing as well (it's been 15-20 years!), but we didn't have the time or money, and Kate wasn't keen on looking after the kids by herself while I zoomed around the mountain tops.

We had fun tobogganing though.. Falls Creek and Mt Hotham are quite different places. We didn't need chains to get to Falls Creek, and you entered at the bottom of the mountain and got the lifts to the top for the skiing. The tobogganing area was nice and big though, and long. Unfortunately it got a bit slushy towards the end of the day (it was a warm sunny day) which slowed it down considerably.
Mt Hotham was completely different! You had to drive to the top of the mountain, and then ski down (getting lifts back up). We needed chains, and you were literally driving through the snow. Quite a unique experience compared to the day before. I really liked the "feel" of Mt Hotham, much more snow and much more powdery. Unfortunately their toboggan run was very small and nowhere near as good as Falls Creek. Again it got slushy and slow towards the end because it was another beautiful warm day.

Anyway enough babbling, here's the pics.

2. Abbey at Falls Creek
3. Family at Falls Creek
4. A frozen leaf at Mt Hotham
5. Mt Hotham
6. Mt Hotham toboggan area

Thanks for looking.

Great report and photos, Mike. I remember my children's first experience of snow and tobogganing - they were so excited. Youngest (probably about 3 then) would run away and play, then get snow in her gloves, come back crying, we'd empty out the gloves and warm her up - away again for 20 mins, come back crying, empty out - this carried on for a few hours!

The secret is a have a complete change of clothes before setting off for home in a warm car - that makes the day end wonderfully!
