Almost Fatal

l am as a rule not a person to advertise personal matters however after the weekends dramas l will as a reminder to other parents.
At 6.15 Sunday morning we had police at our door to tell us that our 17y.o son had been involved in a car accident and was being taken to hospital.
When we arrived we were told he had a broken nose, fractured skull and multiple facial cuts after going through the windscreen of a car that had hit a tree being driven by a friend who had been drinking, so obviously no seat belt was being worn.
Both were at fault, it hits home a bit harder when it is one of your own so to the parents out there with kids just about to venture onto our roads maybe one more plea to take care and come home in one piece.

It's amazing so many of us survive the poor judgment of those teenage years. Your story has reminded me to keep an ear out for ways to compensate for that lack of judgment when our own kids start flying the coop.

Hope he gets well soon.
My daughter will be 16 next year and wants to drive and that scares the crap out of me to be honest, but it has to be done

Oh Mick, what a dreadful shock to the system that must have been and probably still is at this stage.
I hope everything goes well with your sons recovery and that he comes home to you soon.

My son, when he was 16 was knocked from his bike and run over by a 4wd. Luckily the bike landed on top of him and spread the weight of the car over him. That was the last time he went around a round about the wrong way.
Talk about learning the road rules the hard way.

Wow!

Hope everyone recovers fully and that appropriate lessons are learned by all involved...

Hang in there, I can not imagine what it might be like to have the police knock at the door and telling you about the accident...

Thanks for sharing this with us Mick.

I hope some good comes from your post.

Everyone needs reminding that drinking and driving is a potential and regular killer....and yet we are all more worried about terror and global warming... something is really out of wack. What is causing actual deaths on a regular basis.. the numbers record the real danger.

It is unfortunate that our society is not more focused on this problem.

We can fit cd players and all sorts of goodies to our cars one wonders why the ignition is not hot wired to a breath tester which will imobilise a vehicle if booze is detected therein.. simple effective and cheap technology.

If the authorities were serious there would be breath testers outside each and every pub and club... but all we get are some comical adds showing a drunk with half his sckull removed... which reinforces the general concept...that most nights it will be alright.

We dont want to upset the booze industry do we ...

When I think of the deaths in this region over the past couple of years most have been drink related yet everyone thinks it only happens to someone else.

I hope your Son recovers but is left with an appreciation of how very very lucky he was to survive the accident.

I was looking at the car races and see a certain burbon manufacturer advertising on one of the cars and could not help but think ..how many deaths have occured as a result of this companies product... one , two ???or hundreds...

All readily condem other drugs as if booze is ok.. I would expect more folk die from booze than die from OD's... more home wrecked from booze than anything else I bet.

Our society is happy to ban smoking all over on the basis that it produces a long lingering death yet drinking thats OK .. to me that seems so out of touch with the reality of booze and death.

Also the promotion of motor cars as toys is so ridiculous, the sale of vehicles that are capable of speeds three fold and more the general speed limit again is tradgically stupid ...

I wonder how they do it on planets more advanced than ours.

Mick sorry to hear about your stress and the worries of your son's welfare and health. They never really learn, being there to support them is good but they need to realise what their actions could have done (or did do) to them and their friends. it will only hit home when they feel it personally. You and i were bulletproof once - I lost my magical powers of invincibility one night, changed me. I hope it changes your sons views and outlook on life. Glad he will mend. As for the driver - well - he needs some Special High Intensity Training followed up with a dose of reality

Mick, my thoughts are with you and your family. I can only imagine the fear that went through your mind when you saw the police at the door.

I hope your son has a full and speedy recovery.

Thanks for thinking of us, and sharing your sad news with your IceInSpace friends.

That would be horrible news to get, hope your son recovers and learns from
the experience.

We've had two young locals killed two weeks ago. Skylarking on the way
home from work. Three kids in the car the driver killed instantly he was
a friends son, one passenger taken off lift support last week and died, he
was just catching a lift home and only been working at the mill for 3
weeks, it was his first job. The second passenger who was in the back
seat walked away un-injured. Talk about a sad lottery. They were chasing
another idiot who apparently had a habit of push the other workers to race
him, mostly the younger ones. He's not been seen back at work since. But
who do you blame. The desisions we make as young people on the spare of
the moment without a thought to the consquences.

regards,CS

A most dreadful event, Mick. My sympathy is attached along with best wishes for your son's rapid recovery.

I must put up my hand though and acknowledge that I, in my younger years, did some stupid things with motor cars (I'm in my early sixties now). When I think back on that period of my life I reckon that I was lucky to survive and, for that matter, not to injure someone else.

Is it possible to tell a young man (or even a young lady these days) that s/he is not immortal? I somehow doubt it. The young are risk takers; always have been, always will be - it seems to come with the territory.

Mick, you will never stop worrying about your children - at least in my experience - so you'd better get used to it.
