Thumbs down Computer time synchronization not working

I've noticed over the past month or so I've been unable to update my computer time by using the syncronization routine. When I try to synchronize with time.nist.gov I get

"An error occured when synchronizing with time.nist.gov"

and with time.windows.com

"An error occured while windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com. The time sample was rejected because: The peer's stratum is less than the host's stratum"

I've done a bit of a search and the only solutions seem to use time sites that are only suitable if you live in the States. Would someone offer a solution for this problem.

Not so, mine updates just fine with time.windows.com

If you have one of those no use, performance bloating, good for nothing, software firewall packages (I'm happy with my router firewall thanks), I suggest you look there first. Try allowing UDP on port 123....

Interesting....my desktop didn't want to syn either but when I looked at the list of choices in the dropdown box there were a heap there that have never been there before. Selected time-a.nist.gov and np. Came over to the lappy put the -a in the nist one on here and away it went. It even kept the nist-a one in the list. . strange thing is when I tried that the other night it wouldn't work.

bugger....You've broken mine as well, mine has been working flawlessly, but I just thought I'd do a test sync, I get the same error now as you. I'd say it's shonky MS have done. There may be an answer here. Listed in one of the threads...

Word has it that MS couldn't fix time.windows.com in time for the recent DST changes so they just shut it down and hoped no-one would notice.
The server you listed Paul didn't work for me but 130.149.17.8 or 132.163.4.102 works fine.

That was the forum I was looking at the other day that I mentioned above. Most of it was double dutch to me, especially when they started talking about modifying the registry I'm not allowed near sharp objects.

I like the quotes in one of the forums....

FWIW.
Paul, you can also add,
> au.pool.ntp.org
to the list.
It's for the Australian area.
Does not use the nist servers or something.
I had trouble with the listed time.nist & Windows.time. Switched to the Oz one n no probs.
See > http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/au
& > http://support.ntp.org/bin/view/Serv...TwoTimeServers
I'm not sure how many you can add but I only got three in before it started to delete the others.
