seeing was good last night, trying to pull the craters out of plato not so easy.

to iceman 4x powermate.................. in reply to your request of do i use filters, i just realised theres a uv/ir filter on it which i installed when i bought it to keep the dust out...

to tamtarn i did a map stack in registax using the rim as my map points i should have used more elsewhere but i wanted to see how many craters i could get,might redo it later for my own files.

Hi Alchemy (what's your real name, btw?)

The 4x gives a nice scale. Sometimes I wish I had a 4x, especially when the seeing isn't up to the magnification given by the 5x + extension that that filterwheel introduces (makes it > 6x).

In another thread you mentioned that the manual wheel was too tight so you were waiting to get an automated one? I have a manual filter wheel, so they can be used effectively. Just unscrew the allen key bolts a tiny bit so that the mechanism rotates more freely. That's what I did.

Of course I'd prefer to be completely automated and control the filterwheel from my laptop, but if a manual wheel is all you can afford or all you have, I can tell you that they are just as easy to use.

The dampening is no better or worse than an automated one either - it takes about 5-7 seconds for the vibrations to stop. During this time I'm usually adjusting gain or re-centering the image so I don't find it a problem at all.

i had toyed with the idea of using the dmk for some longer timed shots. i did do a shot of m16 ( a little bit of it) as an experiment, ( i had hoped it to be a cheap CCD camera , the jury is still out on this) i thought a motorised one would be better with long shots as recentering could be a pain, having said that i will go and have a look at one in the shop again and see if they will let me play with it.
I will have to make some decision as i am not giong back to the webcam for jupiter, all i got this seasonwere black and white but the detail was so much better. I read one should purchase the more expensive dichroic filters so its going to cost 500+
