Sitting here in the middle of Sydney watching the helicopter parade over head as POTUS takes a nice drive from Sydney airport to his hotel in the CBD....
No nice Sydney skyline for him though, its bucketing rain....

I saw it on the late news, it's pretty amazing that they can devote nearly 15 minutes of air time just so we can watch a black car drive by for about 5 seconds.
I find it a bit hard to get excited with that sort of thing.

He's the elected leader of arguably the most influential economy and power in the world, and like him or not I think that rational people on our side of the political fence (i.e. a western democratic society) have to put up with him while he's in power. I don't like him, the man, any more that any or you - but I think that for little 'ol Australia to have him here ATM is testamant to our standing in the world community and maybe we could be a little courteous to all attending this summit. A big expense in the global scale of where we fit in the world? I think not.
Then again - maybe I'm too conservative...... or maybe I still respect the position and title of the President of the United States over and above the individual figurehead. Like it or not - I guess that this person has a hell of a lot to do with our own well being here in Oz.
Putin is here too - and I think that maybe he is intrinsically more evil given his own ties to the KGB and the fact that he's turmning a blind eye to the Russians dumping nuclear waste sourced from Australia in the Pacific.
On on another note - this whole shebang could have been held in Canberra and full security could have been had for about a buck fifty.
I guess that this person has a hell of a lot to do with our own well being here in Oz.
Unfortunately thanks to Howard, we were under Keating getting very friendly
with our neighbours or getting to be. And Howard hasn't made in roads to making
positive ties to the Democats in the US either, which could be our down fall
if they win power in the US.
I have no problem with a General Chat discussion about what's going on in Sydney with visiting leaders etc, but if this thread turns political, I'm sorry it will be closed.

Agreed that this should have been at Hamilton Island or Canberra or somewhere other than Sydney where the disruption would be less and security easier, however Sydney is John Howard's home town and he wanted to show it off to the leaders of the Asia-Pacific. It is a beautiful city. It is Australia's icon.

AND the reality of wasting money is ..it goes somewhere and whilst its moving thats the only time us little folk have a chance of a few crumps falling... so there is no problem its alll good.
Histroic Climate Change will be discussed, and although nothing will be set in concrete I feel it is wonderful that at least by the raising of the issue the concerns some folk have are at least getting an airing...
Leave the politics out of the event and see it as a money making event... someone has got paid and soon they will be out in the economy buying stuff...maybe from you.
I dont like protests but one was begining to wonder if protests died at the end of the Viet war... everyone will have a great time and feel they have made a difference... and no doubt at the end of it all things will be a little different ..how I have no idea.

Interesting article. The statement attributed to French philosopher Jean Baudrillard in this article leads me to believe he has mistakenly been honoured with the title of philosopher. Wiki gives the meaning as follows:
"The word itself is of Greek origin: φιλοσοφία (philosophía), a compound of φίλος (phílos: friend, or lover) and σοφία (sophía: wisdom)."
His position doesn’t appear to display much love, let alone wisdom?
