Ethos pricing revealed

US retailers are listing the Ethos at US$620, just a tad less than the 31mm Nagler at US$640.

As Bintel sells the latter for A$880 I expect the Ethos will cost about A$855 here.

Wow, very interesting. I can't wait to look through one, but I very much doubt i'll ever buy one.

I'll stick with my 14mm XW for now, but I will go for a 31mm t5 in the future : )

I'm in the crowd who would like to look through one but wouldn't dream of paying that much to own any single EP no matter how well reviewed. So I hope someone I know buys one soon.

For $855 I could have another two Pentax XWs and feel like I was getting a good bargain in comparison.

Maybe more type 5's of the 13mm variety? I've read the ethos is a little short on eye relief.

Unfortunately I couldn't justify spending that much on an eyepiece, but I'd love to look through one!

Hi Geoff,

If you don't need to wear glasses the eye relief on the ETHOS is excellent. I was able to easily take in the full 100deg FOV without my glasses on. Unfortunately it isn't for me as I prefer to wear my glasses when I observe and I prefer an AFOV around 70 degrees. The eye relief is just a tad short of being able to use it with glasses on and take in more than about 60 degrees AFOV. For those that don't need to wear glasses and like a wide AFOV the ETHOS is exceptional and worth every cent of its very high asking price IMO, if you own premium equipment. The eye relief on the ETHOS is slightly better than on the 13mm Nagler T6's.

At that price level, I will be buying one in the next six months.

With a paracorr, it will be just at the right exit pupil to giving stunning views out of my scope with just the right level of contrast. Also, with the larger FOV, it will make an EP in the 17mm range largely redundant, saving me having to purchase the 17 Nagler.

I am very supportive of your thought process Rodstar...I am confident that you need one of these for your scope...in fact, I would suggest that it would be a horrible offense to the Astro Gods if you did not do your duty and buy one now...I mean heck, you've got a great scope and not having the best glass to go with it would be a crime...after all, the eyepeice is a large percentage of your optical train what a waste your scope is without it!

Having said all of that, I am particularly interested in the value of the "bribe" needede to keep your signifigant other okay with this purchase...in case I need to do the same...

I, along with many others, anxiously await your purchase and can see no reason for your delay...get on with it man!

I've ordered an Ethos and expect to have it shortly. If you like, we could
try plugging it into your SDM 20" one night to see what you think of it.
After having used it in Texas and then in California last May when Al
Nagler had the first three pre-production proto-types with him, I am already sold.

By all accounts it is a tremendous achievement in ocular science and enjoyable to use...I hope that you get many years of enjoyment out of it!

Totally agree with what an achievement for Tele Vue it is.

In his presnetation at the Texas Star Party, Al Nagler told us how the
eyepiece was a challenge put forth by David whilst Al was away from
the office in Chester for a while, and then fulfilled by Al's long-time
protégé Paul Dellechiaie. I think Al said David and Paul asked each other
what they could do as a special project and the answer was the 100 degree
effective field of view eyepiece. Al had some design notes I recollect dating
back to perhaps the 1970's for an eyepiece with a 100 degree effective FOV,
however, had never found the time to do the engineering.

With our own product having a name borrowed from Greek legend,
I told Al I particularly liked the name 'Ethos' and he laughed. He said they
were really proud of the name but that it probably took them longer to
come up with this great name than to design the eyepiece.

Anyway, it certainly is destined to become a classic in its own right.
