observatory piccies from Murrumbateman

Finally got to put up some pics of the observatory under construction...

http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/equipment/observatory/

Next step is to enclose the end of the slab and add a roll-off roof. Not going to happen real soon, but maybe before the end of the year if I can save my pennies.

cheers, Bird

That's fantastic, Anthony! It looks awesome.

I'd love to have a permanent setup.

yeah, the tree is our pride and joy, it has to stay. I sited the obs to put the tree in the west so its not blocking anything too serious. The rest of the site is clear down to the horizon.

cheers, Bird

Beautiful site, great set-up, Anthony!

I passed through Murrumbateman on Friday and again last Sunday on my way to and from Border Stargaze. What a quaint little place, just far enough from Canberra to enjoy a slightly darker sky, I would imagine?? How dark does it get?

I drove through Murrumbateman too, on the way back from Victoria. I almost stopped in at Anthony's for a place to stay - every single room in Canberra was booked out, so we had to head north to Goulbourn.

The skies are very dark at our place, we're about 3km west of Murrumbateman on a housing estate that has no street lights. You can see from the pics that the houses out here are a fair distance apart, something like 100m.

Murrumbateman itself is so small we get no light pollution from it out here, but we can see the lights of Canberra in the south and Yass/Goulburn in the NW and N. Not too bad though, Yass is quite small and 20km away, goulburn is bigger but its about 100km away. canberra is the biggest nuisance, about 50km away.

cheers, Bird

It sounds ideal, Bird. If you talk it up too much, you'll have us all stampeding to come observing in your backyard!
