Sydney (south) drivers - M5 & M7 point to point speed warning!!

Emailed to me from my father-in-law just now....unsure of the legitimacy but thought I'd post just in case it's true. Better to be aware than not...

For me this is DAMN excellent news (if true). Finally - I can sit there driving along at the speed limit (as I always do) and KNOW that those turkeys who race past me are going to get done every time. My biggest pet hates are speeding drivers and those that tailgate at speed. I'm sure that only a very small percentage of drivers on the road paid attention to the term "inertia" in physics class, and that the rest reckon that they can pull up from 120+ kmh in the 1 meter they leave in front of them in a split second.

I hate draconian "big brother" measures generally, but at least this might go some way to even out the temperament of drivers on these two roads. Every time I go on them I find that I and maybe two or three other drivers actually stick to the limit. The rest push past and attempt to make ME feel guilty for being in their way. Every day I venture out on to these two roads I witness those that choose to obey the road rules being bullied by those that don't give a dam about themselves or anyone else.

Cheers
Chris

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
The M5 and the M7 are now equipped with Point to Point speed devices. Once you enter the M7 for instance you pass the etag and it beeps. At the same time a camera takes a photo of your car and records the exact time. For those who have exited the M7 they would be aware that upon exit the etag system beeps again as you leave.

At the same time another camera at that point takes a photo of the car and the time. Then the computer calculates the time it has taken you to travel between the two points and calculates you speed. If you have completed the clocked journey too fast you are given a speeding ticket.

At the present time the speed limit is 100K.P.H. and you have a tolerance of 102 and no more. One fraction over that speed and you are issued with a fine automatically.

Also remember that school zone camera's are not speed tolerant.
Anything over, even 41, is a fine. This means people will be doing 38 to avoid any differences in their speedo readings.

Remember, this is going to be a very costly experience for some drivers. It is also going to mean vehicles will be travelling at 95 in order to ensure that no ticket is issued.

What a shock some drivers are going to have when they have used this roadway for a week and get a weeks tickets BOTH WAYS. Of course your license will also be recalled for three months and you know the rest.

Take the advice and if you ignore it remember this email when you pay all those fines.

Also, remember that now with the new legislation, fighting a speed camera fines is almost impossible. You must prove the device is faulty and if you are not a technician working on them, you have no chance of beating the fine.
The Pacific Highway has a set and these are recognised as large steel frames over the lanes with a speed camera and some distance up the road is another large metal frame with a speed camera.

These new point to point systems are being put onto any expressway or highway where vehicles are not able to exit between those points.

Concerned activist in warning people of this immanent fine arrival.
Take care.

Trying to find the source from my father in law as I type Mike.

Pointer: do the speed limit and you're OK.

But of course

Really I do think it's a wise move. They already do a similar thing for trucks on the major highways, don't they?

Thanks David. I'll look out for these on those two motorways over the next little while. Even though there was no mention of the M5 & M7 perse I gather that they might still exist.

It is a hoax, there are no point to point speed cameras on the M5 or M7.

M5 South West Motorway sets the facts straight on hoax email

The M5 South West Motorway today dismissed a hoax email claiming the motorway has set up secret point-to-point speed cameras.

Rex Wright, General Manager of Interlink Roads, owners and operators of the M5 South West Motorway, confirmed the email, currently circulating in Sydney, is a hoax.

The email falsely claims speed cameras take photos of vehicles entering and exiting the motorway, and based on the time it takes between the two points, issues a fine if the vehicle has travelled too quickly.

“No secret speed camera system operates on the M5 South West Motorway – this is an urban myth,” Mr Wright said.

“There is normal policing of NSW speed limits on the M5 as occurs on the road network generally. We support safe driving and encourage motorists to obey the posted speed limits.”

Westlink Dismisses Hoax Email
19/7/2007

Westlink M7 has dismissed a hoax email currently circulating that claims that the motorway has implemented a secret speed fine based on the time a vehicle enters and exits the motorway.

Rachel Johnson, General Manager of Westlink M7, said that the email was a hoax and that no secret speed enforcement system operates on the Westlink M7.

Westlink supports safe driving and urges all motorists to comply with posted speed limits.

“However, the secret speed fine system detailed in the hoax email does not exist,” Ms Johnson said.

“Speed limits are enforced on the Westlink M7 through the normal policing measures that operate on all NSW roads.”

“Westlink meets regularly with the NSW Highway Patrol.”

Westlink has installed signs that remind motorists that speed cameras are used in NSW.

These are the standard speed camera signs seen on roads across the state and do not mean that any new or secret speed system operates on the Westlink M7.
