A couple of luna, 19th May 2005

Hey guys.

Watching the moon swim and change shape in bad seeing is quite interesting.. except when you want nice crisp views and nice crisp images.

Here's a couple of luna shots in very ordinary seeing..

Details:
Scope: 10" dob without tracking
Seeing: 3.5/10
Transparency: 6.5/10
Capture: ToUcam 10fps, 1/50s, 0 gain, 0 gamma, 95% saturation
FL: ~3100mm, using 2.4x barlow pulled out and ToUcam pulled out
Processing: 1-2 frames stacked, photoshop filters and contrast/levels adjust

Pretty disappointed with them because they're just not as sharp as I'd like, but the seeing was just too bad..

Clavius - This is a single frame as there were no sharp frames to stack.

Mercator, Campanus and Kies - This is a stack of a couple of frames. Check this region in AS&T page 58.. obviously my image is not high enough resolution or sharp enough to really compare to the magazine shot, but anyway..

We tend to forget about the moon sometimes and that it can be just as difficult, if not more difficult a target to get a good shot of, as anything else. There's just not enough black to hid those noisey, turbulent bits.

For the seeing you had there's nothing wrong with those shots. Its amazing how discriminatory in our images we are becoming these days with the advances in astronomical hardware technology and processing platforms. They would have probably be considered excellent shots only 20-30 years ago.

JFMI was there a barlow involved?

That 1st shot is simply stunning Mike. Almost feel like I'm flying over it in a lunar orbiter & looking out the window.Great stuff.

Thanks for the comments guys.. hopefully i'll have some better ones to post in the next few days - got some more shots last night and the seeing was 200% improved.
