Bolt Question

Can someone identify this type of bolt?
They have the normal camera thread, the thread is 12mm long.
The bolt needs to go through the larger hole in the bar.
Looking to get a few spares.

Thanks
Brendan

Hi Brendan they are just called Hex Bolts and can be purchased at Bunnings or similar stores.

You just need to know if they are Metric (M3-M12) or Imperial being 1/8" to maybe 3/8" or any size you have or after.

Brendan if it fits in the camera mount it's a 1/4 x 20 (20 teeth per inch). Go to any bolt place and ask for a 1/4 stainless steel socket head cap screw 1/2 inch long.
Bunnings do not have a good range of this stuff, any bolt and bearing place should have them or you can buy them online.

They are Socket Head Cap Bolts which can be tightened with an Allen Key.

For astronomy purposes, most of mine are 1/4"-20 Whitworth Thread although I do have some 6mm and 8mm sizes too.

I have seen them in Bunnings and Supercheap Auto.

Dennis.

Sorry Dennis don't you mean UNC?
My Austin Healey Sprite is all Whitworth, old British standard.

Brendan,

Although UNC and British Standard Whitworth(BSW) are similar, they are not identical. The pitches at each imperial diameter are the same eg 20 threads per inch for a 1/4" thread. However the pitch angles are different.

Whitworth is 55 degrees UNC is 60 degrees. That means that while a BSW male thread will screw into a UNC hole, a UNC male thread won't easily screw into a BSW hole. It might bind. Given that you want to screw into a female, the safest option is to buy a BSW machine screw.

Seems like there are many names for these fasteners, however they are readily available.
