iStar D180mm F8-R30(F1440) Objective Lens (Anastigmat) with Front & Back Plates $1850

iStar*D180 F8-R30 (F1440) Doublet Objective Lens with Back Plate, Front Mounting Ring and machined lens cap. Includes Moonlite Focuser adapter (M100x1.5, connects to standard Moonlite large format 2-1/2" focuser), two finder scope mounts with backing plates and two Ø235mm mounting rings.

This is going to make a wonderful instrument suitable for planets or deep space with a full 180mm aperture. The R30 designation indicates that the correction for chromatic aberration is equal to or better than a classic achromat with 30% longer focal length (ie. better than F8 x 1.3 = F10.4, or 1872mm).

The objective is of a high quality and was purchased directly from*iStar*Optical in Arizona, USA in 2020. This was one of their prototype D180/R30 objectives with a weight of 7.9Kg in mounting cell.

The lens has been manufactured using a heavy flint and special crown glass to achieve a high level of correction. The resulting lens is optically excellent.

The back plate and front mounting ring suit a rolled aluminium tube of 230.8 inside diameter x 1050 length.

The front and back plates were manufactured to suit my intended project, however they can easily be used build a more conventional telescope tube. Construction notes and photos for my tube design are here:-

Not a buyer Graham but if its any help to a potential buyer i know of one of Ales' i-star scopes - 200mm f/6 probably the only one in Australia - and the views it delivers are little short of fantastic especially with 2" televue eyepieces eg the 17mm Nagler IV . I had a chance to look through a few weeks back at 47 Tuc and a few other DSOs - much better view than my C-11 super bright and clear and although a 2 element achromat the glass chosen by Ales at istar is really something special. The value is phenomenal too.

Hi John, thanks for that testimonial. Much appreciated. Let's just say I am disappointed that I will not be completing this scope. I was really looking forward to the planetary views. cheers .... Graham
