DIY ASIAIR with a Raspberry Pi

Hey everyone!

I'm pretty sure this is the most appropriate spot to post this question. I'm looking to start a project over the summer while I teach myself C/C++ to get a Raspberry Pi and use it with my laptop like a DIY ASIAIR where it controls my setup and downloads the images, without needing my laptop out in the elements.

Does anyone have any advice/experience with something like this? Or would it be better to just go for a dedicated mini PC? I've never used a Raspberry Pi before either so any advice is very much appreciated!

There's already quite a mature product, Astroberry which runs on the Raspberry Pi. It supports INDI, Stars, etc. It's somewhat more flexible than the ASIAir as it's somewhat brand agnostic - as long as there's an INDI driver for the product, it should work under Astroberry.

I put a Pi 5 with the pimoroni nvme base in my heq5 recently (boots and runs from an nvme ssd). I was a bit skeptical it would have enough power to run kstars / phd2 / ekos but so far it has been working great. A little bit clunky over VNC but still very usable.
