RJ11/RJ12 – pin numbering/wire colour convention?

Hello,

Is there a defined standard for identifying the pin numbering and cable colour code for RJ11/RJ12 Jacks and Receptacles? I am about to build an auto guider cable and all the how to’s I have seen appear to number from different ends and use different wire colours?

I require 6 conductors so I think that this defines the RJ12 6 way Jack/Receptacle.

Thanks Chris. I see that whilst the Male connector is the Plug, the Female receptacle is the Jack?

With Jack being a lad's name, in my ignorance I assumed that a Jack was a Male connector and not the wall mounted female receptacle.

Dennis, RJ12 & 11 are normally used for telephony and as such there is no wire colour/pinout convention. There are two main variations in off the shelf cables, one has reversals the other is straight through and despite the plug being 6 pin, cables come in 2, 4 and 6 wire variants. This diagram will explain a little more clearly the pin numbering when looking at the plugs.

Thanks Phil. In the end, I just traced the signals paths through using a multi meter as the advice on the web was somewhat confusing. Much of it was text only with no diagrams, so people were writing “solder the blue wire to…” or “connect pin 1 to…” and clearly in some posts, pin numbering ran 1 to 6 and in others 6 to 1.
