bright, green meteors

hi everyone,

a few months ago me and my brother were setting up our 'scopes when he spotted a very impresive meteor. he called out to me and i could see it moving behind the trees, we live near a small airport so i thought it was a plane, i moved to the left and watched it. it was a bright green colour and pieces broke off it to form smaller meteors, we watched it for around 5 secs until it went behind a house. it was around 6pm (during daylight savings) so the sky was still rather bright. it was in the west, about 20 degrees above the horizon. it appered to be moving from north to south. apperantly alot have been witnessed lately.

anyone got any ideas regarding there origin?

Asteroid belt.....no question.

If it landed somewhere it could be found, there is a meteor section of the ASV, you could see if they have a yahoo forum, i think one of the IIS members is from the ASV who runs the meteor section.
If you had a direction of the meteor and which direction/angle it was travelling, elevation and the date/time/location from when you saw it you can record the data, and give it to one of these guys who will be better qualified as i am to do something with the information. If someone else spotted the same meteor it can be triangulated and determined if it is possible it survived atmospheric entry.

Mmm, well i can't recall any exact positions, times etc. this is what i do know...

>i was at lat -38, long 144 when i saw it.

>time was around 6:00pm, Febuary 2007.

>it was 25-35 deg above the horizon.

>it was in the west, moving from north to south.

>it was decreasing height at 3-5 deg per 20 deg horizontal (if that makes sense!).

i hope that helps, jarrod.
