Ngc 3313

Here's NGC 3313. I didn't have much colour data to work with

Flick link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/978070...in/dateposted/

This wonderful galaxy is located in the Hydra Cluster. It presents a relatively small target some 181 million light years from us. Even though it is a large galaxy some 130 light years across, at this distance, it has an apparent size (v) 3.9 × 3.2[1]. It is a reasonably dim target, with a surface brightness is 23.4 mag/arcsec2.

Getting your head around these distances is incredible and challenging. For context, non-bird dinosaurs lived around 230-66 million years ago. It is mind-blowing that the light used to compose this image left this galaxy during the time of the dinosaurs on our planet. Yep, time machines are fantastic.

I love how this galaxy hangs against the background of stars and dust. The well-defined, thick ropey arms are the most interesting feature to my eye. Within these arms, two weak dust lanes can be seen in the bar of the galaxy.

Details:
Constellation Hydra
Right ascension 10h 37m 25.4s[1]
Declination −25° 19′ 10″[1]

Minor Angular Size 2.02 arcmin
Position Angle 110°
Distance 55.4 Mpc (181 Mly)[1]
Size ~39.04 kpc (127,300 ly)

Instruments:
Telescope: 10" Ritchey-Chrétien RCOS
Camera: SBIG STL-11000 Mono
Mount: Astro-Physics AP-900
Focal Length: 2310.00 mm
Pixel size: 9.00 um
Resolution: 0.82 arcsec/pix

Exposure Details:
Red 6X900
Green 4X900
Blue 4X900
Lum 25X900

Total Exposure: 9.75 Hours

Thanks for looking

Wow that's a beautiful shot! Those delicate arms are just lovely, and the entire field is beautifully processed and full of interesting background galaxies. Wonderful!!

That really is a nice shot Terry! Despite the challenging image size, you really have captured the ethereal beauty of this galaxy - lovely processing

A terrific image . This galaxy must resemble the Milky Way in its shape as well.

Greg.

Good things come in small packages it seems! A beautifully executed shot Terry! An exquisite "little" galaxy! Well done!

Howdy Tezza! Nice to see you on IIS

Love this galaxy, t'was the subject of my second last image taken from my previous observatory before moving up into the mountains

The intriguing thing is the thin almost spider web like arms, looks quite a bit like NGC 289 and NGC 1512, cool.

Incidentally the inner ring is 2.5', the inner spiral arms are 4' across but the outer fainter arms you have revealed extend that size out to about 6' or 7', very nice

Mike

Cheers Marc - It's a fairly dim object, but very pretty.

Thanks David. I do like imaging small targets.

Cheers Mike. Yep, it's been some time. This is the first attempt at processing in about a year. It's amazing how much you can forget in that time.

Wowzers Terry, 2 great images from you, great to see you back producing images with all your data. This one looks so natural but has that POP! at the same time.

A stunning field Terry with a very busy selection of background fuzzies complimenting NGC 3313. A very well formed galaxy, clear spiral arms and nicely defined central core

Thanks man. It's a nice object. Why are all these interesting objects so small?
