Tadpoles. A work in progress.

This is the Southern Tadpole Nebula (Gum 37), as apposed to the Northern Tadpole Nebula, which of course is known as "The" Tadpole Nebula because our world is so northern hemisphere centric. It's a work in progress. This image is approximately 4 hours of exposures from last night, but with several more hours I'm hoping to bring out more detail in the lower part of the image. I'm pleased with what I have so far although with cold fronts coming through, I don't think I'll be able to add to it before the next new moon, so thought I'd post what I have so far. I imaged this instead of chasing the Aurora Australis which has been visible from close to home. Maybe I should have chased the Aurora...?

Nice shot! How are you liking the newt? Is this one of Diego Colonello's masterpieces?

Thanks Franco. Yes, Diego built it from a Sky-Watcher mirror, a Klaus Helmerichs carbon tube and a Moonlite focuser. It's a great scope. I'm very happy with it!

That’s a really charming image I quite like the framing and some really nice detail coming through. Well done!

Thanks David. Hopefully more subs will bring out more detail.

It kinda looks like an Aurora Kevin, cool looking nebula, not often showcased, good luck with the additional data. The weather lately has definitely given the sense that, after three years, maybe the La Nina is indeed coming to an end, huh? had plenty of clear skies up at Eagleview over the last New Moon, a welcomed change.

Thanks Mike,

Any views of the aurora from your place?

Indeed, could make out a faint band low across the southern horizon...but didn't get the DSLR out...doh!

Kevin,
Great work on a rarely imaged object
Can’t wait to see the final image
Well done indeed!!
I concur about the KH carbon fibre newts , my 8” f5 arrived last week so currently building it with GSO gear for Sydney ( to replace the old metal tube 6” )
My 10” KH is working really well under dark skies with GSO gear too

The 8” took 4 months from order ( Klaus is only a small operator but has a niche product )

Cheers
Martin

Thanks Martin. I was surprised it's not often imaged, when it's bright and high in the south and (to my eye) an interesting object. By the way, glad you are enjoying your carbon newts!

I've finally found time to add a few more hours of SII and OIII to the image I posted about 3 weeks ago. This is also a complete reprocess of the data. Acquisition details and links to a larger version are on Astrobin. The extra SII has certainly revealed more detail in the lower part of the image. The ASI2600mm that I used is still relatively new, but I'm very happy with it!
